Job description
Job Summary

We are recruiting a Medical Laboratory Assistant (Band 2) for the Pre‑Analytic section of the Blood Sciences Department at Worcester Acute Trust. The role involves processing Haematology and Biochemistry samples and supporting Biomedical Scientist staff. The position is full‑time (37.5 hrs per week) and works on a 24/7 shift pattern with part‑time options available.

Responsibilities
  • Process samples for Haematology and Biochemistry.
  • Provide support services to Biomedical Scientist staff.
  • Prepare and process simple laboratory tests and pathology samples using pre‑analytical procedures.
  • Use the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for accurate data entry and reporting.
  • Coordinate receipt and handling of samples and reports from other laboratories.
  • Work in accordance with the departmental Quality Management System, SOPs and safety procedures.
  • Maintain stock levels and perform general housekeeping duties.
  • Respond to telephone calls and enquiries from medical and nursing staff, providing technical or clinical advice within limits of knowledge and ability.
  • Assist with clerical work, mail handling, and general laboratory duties.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, audits and mandatory training.
  • Ensure data protection and confidentiality protocols are followed.
  • Support UKAS accreditation processes and maintain laboratory safety standards.
Qualifications
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise work and maintain dexterity and accuracy at varying speeds.
  • Understanding of medical terminology.
  • Good level of literacy and numeracy.
  • Desirable: Good basic IT and keyboard skills, GCSE Grade C or 4 in Maths and English, previous work experience in a health‑care environment or laboratory.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to comply with statutory legislation and trust and departmental policies.
  • Willingness to undertake training and self‑development.
  • Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and professional presentation to users of the service.
Employment Details

Pay: £24,465 per annum. Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Full‑time 37.5 hrs per week, 24/7 shift pattern; part‑time pro rata options available.

Locations: Charles Hastings Way, Worcester, WR5 1DD and The Alexandra Hospital, Woodrow Drive, Redditch, B98 7UB.
