About the opportunity: Looking to start a rewarding career in the medical field? Have an eye for detail and curiosity about how a pathology lab operates? The heart of our operations is the Specimen Reception department at our Tamworth laboratory. This small but vital team plays a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the entire laboratory. We provide training to get started in this fast-paced and essential role. In this position you will handle pathology samples from across the New England region, enter patient demographics into our system, organise samples for different departments, and ship them to larger labs in Newcastle or Sydney. As the main point of contact for medical staff across the hospital campus, you’ll be central to many vital processes. This is an opportunity to gain valuable experience and set you up for future career advancement in the laboratory field.

What you'll be doing

Perform a range of laboratory support and/or specimen reception services and/or collection services, and provide assistance to laboratory staff, under supervision, to deliver a patient-focused service.

Qualifications and selection criteria
  • A working knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn, all aspects of the laboratory environment relevant to the Department
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain high quality work output while managing competing priorities
  • Demonstrated customer service experience and skills, preferably in a laboratory environment, including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical staff
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to investigate and resolve general issues within the laboratory environment
  • Excellent data entry skills including high attention to detail and data accuracy
  • Awareness of legislation, policies and requirements relevant to a laboratory setting
