Job description

Role Overview – Lead Mechanical Technician We are seeking an experienced and technically proficient Lead Mechanical Technician (LMech) to oversee the safe and effective delivery of both planned and reactive maintenance activities across a critical environment. This includes supervising both internal technicians and subcontractors.

This hands‑on supervisory role requires participation in a shift rota and active involvement in day‑to‑day operations. The Lead Mechanical Technician will ensure technical excellence, safety compliance, and optimal team performance across all mechanical systems on site.

Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership
  • Act as deputy to the Technical Services Supervisor (TSS) when required.
  • Participate in emergency escalation protocols and provide out‑of‑hours technical support.
  • Ensure all team members and contractors adhere to safe systems of work, including RAMS, LOTO, and Permit to Work procedures.
  • Maintain required site certifications and act as an Authorised Person (AP) as appointed.
  • Lead by example in upholding technical standards, professionalism, and safety culture.
Maintenance & Engineering
  • Oversee and perform routine and reactive maintenance on mechanical systems and critical infrastructure.
  • Diagnose and repair faults efficiently, escalating complex issues when necessary.
  • Coordinate task scheduling with the DigiHub/Helpdesk and liaise with end users for access and timing.
  • Ensure all maintenance works, including those performed by subcontractors, meet engineering standards and industry best practices.
  • Support small‑scale project works and asset replacement tasks as directed.
Team & Stakeholder Management
  • Allocate technician and subcontractor resources effectively to meet operational deadlines and service quality.
  • Promote a team culture focused on safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement.
  • Foster strong working relationships with clients, engineers, and external vendors.
  • Mentor and support the professional development of technicians and apprentices.
Reporting & Compliance
  • Provide regular progress and issue reports to the TSS, highlighting resource needs or operational challenges.
  • Ensure all activities are logged accurately in the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Adhere to all regulatory compliance and internal engineering standards.
  • Complete all assigned training requirements and maintain up‑to‑date technical competencies.
Required Qualifications & Experience Education & Training
  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Valid Authorised Person (AP) certification (desirable).
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of hands‑on mechanical maintenance experience.
  • Previous work in a critical or high-reliability environment is highly desirable.
Technical Skills
  • Strong fault‑finding and diagnostic capabilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical systems, engineering standards, and statutory regulations.
IT & Systems
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with CMMS platforms for task tracking and asset management.
