Mechanical Design Engineer

Could you be our Mechanical Design Engineer on an initial 1 year fixed term contract at Alstom delivering innovative solutions within the rail sector?

Your future role

The role involves working as part of a dedicated engineering team to deliver high-quality mechanical designs for a range of electronic systems. You will ensure compliance with project-specific requirements and industry standards, while driving innovation and precision. This position requires adherence to agreed timescales and cost parameters, delivering designs that meet performance, reliability, and European Union (EU) regulatory expectations.

We’ll look to you for:
  • Designing mechanical systems in line with project specifications and quality standards.
  • Delivering cost-efficient embedded designs within budget constraints.
  • Adopting and continuously improving innovative design practices and best standards.
  • Ensuring full compliance with design, quality, and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations.
  • Reporting any Quality, HSE, or Human Resources (HR) issues promptly to the Engineering Manager.
  • Translating concepts into detailed manufacturing drawings and complete three-dimensional (3D) files for Line Replaceable Units (LRUs).
  • Managing technical documentation, including creation of Bills of Materials (BoMs), writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and efficient use of Product Data Management (PDM).
  • Integration of Global System (GSI) systems.
  • Supporting prototype development, operating three-dimensional (3D) printers, and assisting with Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design mechanical constraints.
  • Providing production support and general administrative tasks as required.
  • Applying change control and version control processes effectively.
All about you
  • Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven mechanical design experience using relevant Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and three-dimensional (3D) tools (e.g., DraftSight, AutoCAD, CATIA).
  • Knowledge of rail industry standards is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with test procedures, methods, and documentation control systems is advantageous.
  • Strong technical ability with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Logical thinker with problem-solving capabilities.
  • Highly disciplined, self-motivated, and a team player.
  • Effective communicator at all levels with a strong customer focus.
  • Ability to deliver projects on time, within cost constraints, and to quality standards.
