Maternity Day Assessment Midwife (30 hours)

We are looking for passionate, dedicated and innovative midwife who has a particular interest in providing care for pregnant people who require enhanced individualised care attending our Maternity Day assessment Unit [MDAU].

You will work as part of a team who provide antenatal care, within the antenatal clinic. To provide evidenced based people centred midwifery care which can be delivered in a variety of models. You will work alongside other staff and will be supported by a Band 7 team leader.

You will receive support and development from the Senior Midwifery team, and Consultant Obstetricians.

Main duties of the job

Undertake clinical activity to satisfy NMC requirements for registration, act as a role model by maintaining clinical competence and credibility through evidenced based clinical practice, while being aware of the needs of their team

Provide and promote high quality midwifery care and advice within a multidisciplinary environment. Work closely with the Complex care team, Fetal and Maternal medicine Consultants.

Planning and facilitating a person's care within the maternity guidelines and recognising and supporting the need for individualised care plans. Particularly in people whose pregnancy requires extra surveillance

Be an advocate for the person as required, empowering them to promote their own health and well- being. Raise concerns on their behalf with the medical team as required.

Participate in the process of audit and research to evaluate clinical practice and guidelines and in the implementation of change.

Responsible for maintaining an excellent standard of written, digital and oral communication both for His/Herself/Theirself and for those within their sphere of responsibility.

Job responsibilities

Clinical or technical

• Undertake clinical activity to satisfy NMC requirements for registration, act as a role model by maintaining clinical competence and credibility through evidenced based clinical practice, while being aware of the needs of their team.
• Provide clinical expertise and advice to midwives and all other health professionals within sphere of practice
• Will refer clients to other practitioners e.g. clinical specialist, obstetrician, paediatrician, anaesthetist etc when needs and risks are beyond the post holders scope of practice or requires other specialist input
• Will ensure that all members of staff work within their clinical capabilities and promote development of their clinical skills and confidence.
• Will be responsible for all stock and drug control for the team
• Will be an advocate for the woman as required empowering her to promote her own health and wellbeing. Raise concerns on her behalf with the medical team as required
• Ensure clients have the appropriate, evidenced based information to enable them to make informed choices during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period.
• Non-medical prescribing qualification (if applicable): The independent prescriber must be registered with their relevant professional body and comply with the Trusts independent prescribing policy. This includes, having a named clinical supervisor, an annual review of prescribing role and attending mandatory NMP meetings/study days to maintain professional knowledge for CPD. The NMP may only prescribe within their scope of practice.

Leadership or managerial

• Actively engage in the Trusts selection, recruitment, and retention strategies.
• Responsible for managing staff performance and competence within area of responsibility following Trust policies and procedures and to identify and manage poor performance.
• Utilise information technology for the benefit of care delivery to mothers and babies.
• Empower women to make informed choices and be involved in planning their care, acting as their advocate at all times.
• Support the matron to ensure the clinic and assessment unit environment is safe, clean, comfortable and well maintained in line with patient and public expectations.
• Take Professional responsibility for liaising with leads in facilities and infection control to ensure that prompt, appropriate and relevant actions are undertaken to properly maintain a clean and healthy environment.
• Act as clinical midwifery lead for the team and supervise the midwives and other staff within the team ensuring that clinical practice is evidenced based and safe. Demonstrate professional leadership and clinical expertise and foster a culture where all staff can develop their clinical expertise and confidence and feel valued.
• Will be responsible for mentoring and assessing new members of staff, student midwives, post registration and other students.
• Will lead and co-ordinate the clinical activities of the midwifery team in their area particularly in line with Government initiatives and Trust Strategy.
• Will review clinical incident forms and complaints, investigate and initiate action to minimise risks within the service.
• Will be responsible for all aspects of staff management including rostering, absence management, appraisal and development in line with Trust policy and lead on the preparation of orientation and support for new staff.

Information and reporting

• Will be actively involved in issues of Child Protection and may occasionally be required to attend case conferences.
• Critically appraise and apply relevant research findings. Identify and facilitate clinical audit projects and apply them to improve practice.
• Will participate in guideline review and disseminate throughout multidisciplinary setting.
• Participate in the development and implementation of protocols, documentation systems, standards, policy and clinical guidelines in collaboration with other disciplines.

Technology or system support

• Liaise with IT lead midwife to fully utilise electronic patient record for maternity.
• Utilise information technology for the benefit of care delivery to mothers and babies.
• Work alongside the lead obstetricians to take ownership of the ongoing provision of the Tommys App in our maternity unit.
• This would include oversight and quality assurance of the Tommys App at ASPH, at all stages of the maternity pathway, from registration to pregnancy outcome surveys after delivery.
• Registration and Training for new staff using the App and a rolling programme of updates when new versions are launched.
• Support the Q&S team to investigate any incidents, errors or omissions associated with the use of the Tool.
