Job description

TGRC is proud to be partnering with a UK-based applied science and advanced engineering company at the forefront of industrial innovation. Leveraging a multi-disciplinary approach across the automotive, aerospace, and chemical sectors, the firm is driving sustainability by enabling manufacturers to integrate carbon-derived silica into products ranging from tyres to touchscreens- while significantly cutting emissions.

We’re seeking a skilled Materials Scientist to drive research into advanced materials for gas-phase reaction systems. This hands-on role blends materials characterisation, surface science, and reactor engineering, offering the chance to tackle complex challenges with creativity and innovation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate and maintain advanced characterisation instruments (SEM, TEM, XRD, TGA/DSC) to analyse products, catalysts, reactor surfaces, and materials under reaction conditions.

  • Evaluate material stability in high-temperature, high-pressure, and chemically reactive environments.

  • Investigate surface interactions, adsorption/desorption processes, and catalyst deactivation mechanisms.

  • Select, test, and validate materials for reactor construction and catalyst supports, ensuring long-term suitability and durability.

  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve material degradation or failure in reactors, recommending and implementing effective solutions.

  • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to design and advance innovative, sustainable reactor and catalyst systems.

  • Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures, characterisation data, and equipment maintenance.

Required Experience:
  • MSc or PhD in Materials Science or Engineering, preferably with specialisation in high-temperature materials and catalysis.

  • Proven research experience in materials characterisation techniques (SEM, TEM, XRD, TGA/DSC or equivalent).

  • Solid knowledge of surface interactions, adsorption/desorption processes, and catalyst deactivation mechanisms.

  • Practical experience in selecting and evaluating materials for challenging reaction environments.
