Role: Maritime Consultant

Location: London or Harwell, UK - Madrid, Spain - Athens, Greece - Hybrid

The Role

You’ll play a key part in offering independent and impartial evidence to policymakers and advising maritime stakeholders on their strategies to decarbonise. You’ll deliver this technical capability across the full product life cycle and in multiple international markets that few others are able to match. We are particularly interested in candidates with a technical background (e.g. naval architecture or marine engineering) who can apply their practical understanding of vessels, propulsion, and alternative fuels to support both policy projects and wider maritime decarbonisation assignments. You’ll join a team helping clients to assess, design and implement the most effective strategies, policies and solutions to make their maritime transport systems more efficient, sustainable and resilient.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of maritime decarbonisation projects for private, public, and industry clients.
  • Contribute to projects involving: policy design and evaluation, techno-economic analysis, scenario modelling and assessment of economic and social impacts
  • Assist in developing technical proposals (mainly, with wider team support as needed).
  • Keep up to date with maritime technology developments, trends, regulations, and challenges.

Key Competencies & Experience

  • Degree (Bachelor’s or higher) in a relevant discipline (e.g. engineering, maritime studies, economics, political science, sustainability).
  • Experience in policy consultancy/advisory (public or private sector).
  • Understanding of maritime sector operations, commercial context, and sustainability challenges.
  • Knowledge of European climate transport policies (e.g. Fit for 55).
  • Familiarity with maritime policies (IMO, EU, regional frameworks).
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesise data from multiple sources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with ability to explain technical topics clearly.
  • Team player with experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong time management, able to balance multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Fluency in English and excellent report-writing skills.

Desirable Competencies and Experience

  • Experience developing/assessing maritime decarbonisation policies and strategies.
  • Ability to leverage sector contacts to create opportunities and build relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of economic analysis and policy evaluation methods.
  • Understanding of vessel design, operations, energy efficiency, and alternative fuels.
  • Knowledge of technical measures, carbon pricing, and MRV processes.
  • Fluency in additional languages (esp. Europe, Latin America, South East Asia).
  • Strong numerical, modelling, and coding skills.
