The Opportunity

Our client is a leading UK infrastructure and utilities contractor. They are seeking a visionary Managing Director to spearhead its Energy (Gas) division. This is a pivotal executive appointment designed to drive the strategic growth, operational excellence, and safety leadership of a high‑performing business unit.

As the energy landscape undergoes a significant transition, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing large‑scale gas infrastructure projects, maintaining Tier 1 client relationships, and ensuring the division remains at the forefront of the UK’s evolving utility sector.

This organisation is renowned for its commitment to engineering excellence and its people‑centric culture. The successful Managing Director will have the autonomy to shape the future of the Gas division, supported by the robust resources and reputation of a premier UK contractor.

Key Responsibilities

The Managing Director will hold full P&L accountability for the Gas division, focusing on the following core areas:

  • Strategic Leadership: Defining and executing a multi‑year growth strategy that aligns with the broader group objectives and the UK’s transition toward a decarbonised gas network.
  • Operational Excellence: Overseeing the end‑to‑end delivery of gas distribution, transmission, and maintenance contracts, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Safety & Compliance: Championing a "Safety First" culture, ensuring rigorous adherence to health, safety, environmental, and quality (HSEQ) standards across all field and office operations.
  • Commercial Management: Driving financial performance, identifying new revenue streams, and managing complex commercial negotiations with major utility providers and regulatory bodies.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Acting as the primary ambassador for the division, nurturing long‑term partnerships with clients, supply chain partners, and industry regulators (e.g., Ofgem).
Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be an experienced senior leader with a proven track record within the UK utilities or civil engineering infrastructure sectors.

Experience & Qualifications
  • Extensive experience at a Director or Senior Management level within the gas industry or a closely related infrastructure discipline.
  • Deep understanding of the UK regulatory environment and the specific challenges facing the gas networks.
  • A demonstrable history of managing substantial P&L accounts and delivering sustainable margin growth.
  • Strong leadership credentials, with the ability to inspire diverse, multi‑disciplinary teams across various geographical sites.
  • Relevant professional qualifications (e.g., Degree in Engineering, Business Management, or Chartered status).
