The Machine Operator is a key member of the production team, responsible for operating and maintaining the slitter machine to cut large rolls of material (such as paper, film, or foil) into narrower, specified widths. This role is crucial for ensuring that products are manufactured efficiently, meet quality standards, and are prepared correctly for the next stage of production or for shipping.
Responsibilities
- Machine Operation and Production: Set up and operate the slitter machine according to work orders and job instructions. Load large "master" rolls of material, thread the material through the machine, and set up the blades and machine controls for precise cutting.
- Quality and quantity: Meet daily production targets for quantity while ensuring the finished product meets high-quality standards. Monitor the machine during the run, make necessary adjustments, and conduct visual and dimensional checks on the finished product.
- Packaging and labeling: Ensure all finished rolls are correctly packaged and labeled, following specific job instructions and company standards to prevent mix-ups and ensure products are ready for the customer.
Maintenance and Safety
- Routine checks: Perform regular checks and basic maintenance on the machine to ensure it runs smoothly and efficiently (e.g., cleaning blades, lubricating parts, and identifying potential issues before they become problems).
- Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot and report any mechanical issues, performance problems, or quality concerns to the production manager in a timely manner to minimise downtime.
- Safety protocols: Adhere to all company and health and safety policies, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), following lockout/tagout procedures, and maintaining a safe and organised workspace.
Workplace and Team Collaboration
- Housekeeping: Maintain a clean and safe work area at all times, following the company's "clean as you go" policy, essential for safety and meeting BRC cleanliness standards.
- Communication: Work closely with the team leader, other operators, and the production manager. Effective communication is essential for a smooth workflow, reporting issues, and collaborating to solve problems.
- Flexibility: May assist in other departments or with general cleaning tasks to support overall production needs.
Working hours: Monday - Friday. 6am - 2pm or 2pm - 10pm (these are not rotating shifts).
Salary: £12.50 per hour
