Job description
Consultant UGI & Emergency Surgery

Exciting opportunity for a full-time Consultant UGI and Emergency Surgery. The post holder will play a key role in realising our ambition to build a high quality clinical service by bringing new skills to the upper General Surgery service. The successful applicant will also contribute, with other Consultant colleagues, to the care of general surgery inpatients and the surgical on‑call rota.

Key Responsibilities

The candidate will be a committed clinician with a track record of excellent clinical service delivery, quality improvement, teaching and training. The post holder will be responsible to the Divisional Director of Planned Care at The Hillingdon Hospital and the job plan will be negotiated annually.

An annual job planning and appraisal is required as part of the revalidation cycle. The post is a 9 + 1 PA post: 7.5 days of direct clinical care (DCC), 1.5 days of supporting professional activities (SPA) including clinical and educational supervision, audit and personal CPD, and 1 day of DCC for on‑call. Personal CPD must be included as part of the annual appraisal which is mandatory for the revalidation process.

The post holder will provide an effective and comprehensive service for older people and support continuing service developments. On call participation will be on an approximately 1:10 basis. The post holder will be encouraged to develop any areas of expertise of special interest that may be developed in accordance with the service needs of the department.

Qualifications & Registration

The successful candidate will have and maintain full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be on, or within six months of being admitted to the GMC’s Specialist Register for General Surgery.

Working Patterns

The role is an on‑call General Surgery rota with a 12‑hour consultant review plus 7 days working, under review in line with college guidance.
