Locum Consultant in Intensive Care and Acute medicine

These are new substantive Consultant post. The majority remit of the post holders will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing expansion of the Critical Care Service, either as a single speciality or with programmed activities in Anaesthesia/Theatres or Base Speciality. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job

The post will provide 7 programmed activities, briefly comprising of 8.5 PA of direct clinical care (split between Critical Care approximately 55% and Base speciality 45%, or 100% Critical Care depending on CCT) and 1.5 SPA.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care sits within the Directorate of Critical Care and Surgery, which provides Theatres anaesthetic, Acute and Chronic Pain, and Critical Care and Critical Care Outreach Services at the Croydon University Hospital site in the north of the Borough of Croydon.

The Critical Care Unit currently comprises 15 beds used flexibly for Level 2 and 3 care. In August 2023 we will be moving into a new Critical Care Unit, comprising 22 beds, which is currently under construction. We have a long-established Critical Care Outreach team, led by senior nurses, which works closely with the Critical Care Clinicians.

A surgical enhanced care unit was established post pandemic to provide post-operative level 1.5 care to complex patients and surgeries, and is overseen by the department of Anaesthesia,

There are ten main operating theatres (Croydon Elective Centre), four theatres in the Emergency Surgical Centre (CEPOD & Trauma) and two obstetric theatres. Additionally, the department provides anaesthetic services to Endoscopy/Interventional Radiology and the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory.

Job responsibilitiesTo deliver a consultant led Critical Care, and Critical Care Outreach service as part of the duty Consultant rota and this includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department, viz: Leading twice daily Critical Care Ward Rounds On-call work related to Critical Care Medical Procedures related to Critical Care Communication with patients and/or their relatives Multidisciplinary Team meetings Review of referrals to Critical Care and liaison with ward specialities Critical Care Outreach work, including discharge follow up and ward based NIV, in collaboration with the CCOT specialist nurses Critical Care Follow-up Clinic Programmed activities in Theatres/Anaesthetics or base speciality
Person Specification
education
  • education Membership of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA), Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM)
  • CCT in Intensive Care Medicine (within six months of application)
  • Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care (FFICM) +/- base speciality college
  • Second membership of Royal College relevant to Critical Care Medicine
Experience
