Overview

We have a vacancy for a Locum Consultant Hand/Plastic Surgeon for a period of 6 months commencing 1 January 2026 based in the Pulvertaft Hand Centre, Royal Derby Hospital.

About the post

The successful applicant will join a team of Consultants (4 plastic and 6 Orthopaedic) and will contribute to the delivery of both the elective and trauma Hand and Plastic Surgery service. The Job plan will include clinic and theatre sessions in the Pulvertaft Hand Unit and possibly at other sites within the organisation. The post also includes a 1 in 8 on call commitment. We are seeking a high calibre individual who will bring added value and extra capacity to what is already a highly regarded and very busy unit. The Pulvertaft Hand Centre is nationally and internationally recognised with special areas of interest in hand trauma, wrist, tendon, brachial plexus, rheumatology and particular expertise in orthopaedic, plastic and emergency surgery as well as associated upper limb disorders. The Unit comprises of dedicated facilities including 3 theatres, outpatient department, physiotherapy and occupational therapy department, secretariat and research unit.

Responsibilities
  • Share responsibility for the day-to-day management of the emergency and elective Hand Surgery Service.
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of a plastic hands service with micro vascular, brachial plexus and complex lower limb service.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students.
  • Active participation in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • Be willing to work flexibly to help fully utilise resources available.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
