Locum Biomedical Assistant

Location : East Midlands

Band : 3

Pay Rates : £10 - £14 per hour

Pay Mechanism : Direct pay mechanism

Hours : 37.5 hours per week (about 3 days), 7.5 hours / day between 08 : 00 and 18 : 00, after training

Reports To : Laboratory Manager

Accountable To : Clinical Director through Head of Service / General Manager

Job Summary
  • Role : Assist scientific and medical staff in laboratories
  • Training : No prior laboratory experience required; full training provided
  • Duties : Specimen reception, data entry, sample preparation, and general housekeeping tasks
  • Ideal for : Individuals with a broad general education to GCSE level or equivalent, and excellent communication skills. Experience in high-volume, repetitive environments is advantageous.
Main Duties
  • Understand and operate automated equipment per SOPs
  • Prepare diagnostic tissue sections and non-gynaecological cytology specimens
  • Use the Laboratory Information System according to policies and SOPs
  • Perform general laboratory housekeeping, monitor stock levels, and request consumables / reagents
  • Maintain personal and professional standards as set by the Laboratory Manager
Person Specification
  • Education : GCSE level or equivalent
  • Experience : Desirable - ability to work under pressure, previous NHS / healthcare experience, and knowledge of IT systems
  • Communication Skills : Effective communication both by telephone and face-to-face
  • Planning / Organisational Skills : Accurate work following instructions and prioritizing tasks
