Overview
Training sequence for a Light Vehicle Technician Apprenticeship at Level 3, with related study toward Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills if not already held. The programme lasts 36 months and includes hands-on work at the dealership and dedicated off-site training weeks.
Responsibilities
- Work alongside qualified Technicians with the investigation, repair and service of vehicles
- Produce estimates
- Carry out diagnostics using a range of diagnostic equipment
- Complete warranty work
- Assist with MOTs on vehicles
- Carry out a wide range of technical duties and maintain workshop housekeeping
- Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers
- Contribute to the safe and efficient operation of the workshop; segregate waste for disposal or recycling and comply with environmental legislation
- Demonstrate safety awareness and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage
- Perform fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle
- Obtain and interpret diagnostic and repair information, using electrical wiring diagrams and various diagnostic tools
- Follow recognised diagnostic and repair procedures to identify faults and complete a wide range of repairs
- Test the function of repaired and fitted components and complete workplace documentation
- Use ICT to create emails, documents and perform web-based searches
- Inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer
Apprenticeship Details
- Candidates will work toward achieving the Light Vehicle Technician Apprenticeship Standard at Level 3
- Study toward Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills if not already held
- The programme lasts 36 months and is supported by EMTEC Colleges
- Travel to EMTEC's training centre in Nottingham for 24 weeks of skills training
- Regular visits from EMTEC Vocational Learning Advisors to observe evidence in the workplace
- Assessment includes ongoing soft skills and behaviours, knowledge tests, and practical skills tests across Gateway 1 and 2, culminating in a synoptic assessment (Logbook, Behaviour Assessment, Knowledge Test and Skills Test)
- Qualifications achieved upon completion include:
- Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) (ST0033/AP03) Standard
- Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling (EC842-2006) QCF
- Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement QCF
- Certified Hyundai courses
Programme Requirements
- The candidate must be available to start as soon as possible and travel to the workplace as required
- Must be able to attend block release training weeks in Nottingham
- Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 5:30pm (1 hour lunch). 40 hours per week
- Starting salary: £15,704 for the first year, with potential increases depending on age
- National Minimum Wage/apprentice rates apply as appropriate; first-year limits and age bands apply
- The apprenticeship can be followed by a permanent position on completion and opportunities to become a fully qualified master technician and MOT tester
- On completion, typical salary range for a Light Vehicle Technician is £24k–£27k, with experienced technicians earning up to £33k
