Job description
Overview

We seek 2 expert haematology nurses with strong clinical, communication and leadership abilities to join the Leukaemia CNS team on a fixed term basis to cover maternity leaves (1 post starting mid-December and 1 post starting mid-January). You will be caring for adult patients with acute and chronic leukaemia, bone marrow failure disorders and myeloproliferative neoplasms.

Role and responsibilities
  • The Leukaemia CNS sits within the leukaemia CNS sub-team and the post-holder will be expected to work across the wider haematology CNS team.
  • The Leukaemia CNS delivers a safety critical key worker service and is a specialist centre for teenage and young adult cancers; the team cares for patients aged 20+
  • Provide crucial support to the team alongside Macmillan Cancer Support Workers, PAs, data managers and MDT co-ordinators.
  • Respond to patient queries via a dedicated haematology telephone line run by administrators to protect the CNS from excessive administrative work.
  • Be part of the cancer nursing service that supports university-based and in-house educational pathways and access clinical supervision.
  • Act as an advanced practitioner and key worker for patients on complex treatment pathways, including counselling patients with new diagnoses or disease progression, explaining treatment options, assessing suitability for therapies and identifying information needs.
  • Oversee the pathway from diagnosis through treatment end, co-ordinating work-up, treatments and monitoring response; be the first point of contact for unwell outpatients and patients needing support, intervening to prevent deterioration and co-ordinating hospital admissions.
  • Provide advice and direction to other healthcare staff in a setting with a large population of patients on shared care; work closely with shared and primary care providers.
  • Deliver level 2 psychological support to respond to psychological distress in people with cancer, lead holistic needs assessment and provide written information.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of clinical trials programmes and collaborate with research nurses and CTPs to support patients on research studies.
  • Act as a specialist educational resource to facilitate the professional development of nurses within the division and present work at national and international meetings.
Team and environment

The haematology CNS team is part of the cancer nursing service. The Leukaemia CNS works within the wider haematology CNS team and is supported by Macmillan Cancer Support Workers, PAs, data managers and MDT co-ordinators. There is a dedicated haematology telephone line for patient queries.

Support and development

The case load includes in-patients and out-patients and supports wards, clinics, ambulatory care, supportive day care and chemotherapy day care. You may be involved in developing new services (e.g., PIFU), running patient support groups, evaluating the service and organising educational meetings. The post-holder reports to the lead clinical nurse specialist and may cover CNS staff within the leukaemia sub-specialty and other haematology specialties.

Qualifications and requirements

The role requires evidence of advanced practice in haematology, with strong clinical and leadership capabilities. You will be the key worker for patients on complex treatment pathways and will demonstrate the ability to counsel patients, coordinate care, and support patients across the care pathway. You will be supported to access clinical supervision and have opportunities for education and professional development.
