Lead High Voltage Testing & Commissioning Engineer

Location: Aberdeen

Salary: Up to £100,000 depending on level of experience

Contract Type: Full-Time / Permanent

About Us

Aspion Search are partnering with a leading UK provider of high-voltage engineering solutions that delivers turnkey projects across utilities, renewables, and industrial sectors. The business has a strong reputation for safety, quality, and technical excellence, and due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint an experienced Lead High Voltage Testing & Commissioning Engineer to strengthen their commissioning team.

The Role

As the Lead Engineer, you will oversee and carry out the safe and efficient testing and commissioning of high-voltage electrical systems (up to 132kV and above). You will act as the senior technical authority on site, ensuring compliance with industry standards, verifying engineering quality, and guiding junior engineers. This is a field-based role with travel throughout the UK, supporting projects from initial energisation to final handover.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and perform primary / secondary injection testing, protection relay testing, and SCADA integration.
  • Develop, review, and sign off commissioning plans, RAMS, ITPs, and switching schedules.
  • Coordinate site activities with SAPs, project managers, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide high-level technical expertise, troubleshooting, and fault resolution.
  • Ensure commissioning documentation is accurate, complete, and delivered to client standards.
  • Mentor and support commissioning engineers, promoting knowledge transfer and best practices.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across testing and commissioning processes.
  • Support project planning by providing technical input during design, installation, and pre-commissioning stages.
Requirements
  • HNC / HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Experience in 400kV GIS substation
  • SSE C1 / C3 authorized
  • Extensive, proven experience in HV commissioning within utilities, renewables, or substations.
  • Strong practical knowledge of Omicron, Megger, Micom, Siemens, ABB, Schneider, etc.
  • Authorisation under recognised safety rules (e.g., TP141, National Grid, SSE).
  • Expert understanding of Safe Systems of Work, switching principles, and RAMS.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Demonstrated leadership or senior‑level engineering experience desirable.
Desirable
  • Offshore experience and GWO certifications.
  • Advanced SCADA, fibre optic intertrip, and communication system knowledge.
  • Strong client-facing skills with excellent communication and technical reporting capabilities.
