About us

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible, supporting you to balance family, study, or wellbeing with your career.

At UHS, we champion individuality and diversity, and we are committed to an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities.

Main duties of the job

Are you a Pharmacist with a passion for developing others, leading a service and a desire to make a difference? We are looking for a motivated individual to manage our team of Foundation Pharmacists, the on-call service, and to lead the pharmacist service in the dispensaries both at Southampton General Hospital and at our sister site, the Royal South Hants (RSH) hospital. You will co-ordinate the rota, line manage these individuals, provide pastoral care and support, and respond to issues arising in rotations. Each pharmacist is assigned a mentor who will be a point of contact and support. You will also be responsible for the on-call service for UHS, with on-call pharmacists providing a telephone-based service from home overnight and coming on site only if necessary. The dispensaries are staffed by Foundation Pharmacists on a rotational basis, and you will support their training and provide cross-cover when required. A senior pharmacist for the dispensaries can provide support in your absence.

Job responsibilities

This role focuses on:

  • a) Providing management and leadership for the rotational program for band 6 foundation level pharmacists.
  • b) Managing the pharmacy emergency duty service provision to the trust.
  • c) Providing pharmacist leadership to the dispensaries at SGH and RSH.

Experience of hospital pharmacy services, teaching and training, and staff management are essential. You will occasionally need to travel between sites; a free staff minibus is provided, or parking can be arranged for this purpose. The preferred candidate would be someone who can work immediately at band 8a level. If an appointable band 8a applicant is available, they will be offered the position. If not, the post may be offered as a development opportunity to a band 7 pharmacist willing to work towards becoming a band 8a.

The Trust is moving towards seven-day working. You will be expected to contribute to one evening shift (5-7pm) per week in dispensary and one weekend shift (9-5pm), either Saturday or Sunday, once every six weeks.
