Job description

The team you’ll be working with:

Our Public Sector Business Unit is growing rapidly, and we are looking for an experienced Lead Engineer to join our expanding team delivering high-impact digital and data transformation for UK Governmentp>

You will work in multi-disciplinary squads alongside architects, product owners, designers and data specialists, shaping and engineering secure, resilient services that matter to millions of people. We operate in an open, high-trust environment that values collaboration, continuous learning and diversity of thought.

What you’ll be doing:

Set the technical direction and own end-to-end delivery of modern, cloud-native solutions across discovery, alpha, beta and live phases.

Write production-quality code (typically in Java, TypeScript or Python) while coaching engineers, pairing, and championing clean-code principles.

Embed DevOps practices – continuous integration, automated testing, infrastructure-as-code and observability – to achieve fast, reliable releases.

Promote secure-by-design thinking, ensuring all services comply with NCSC cloud-security principles and GDS technology standards.

Collaborate with stakeholders to refine requirements and translate user needs and policy goals into working software.

Drive engineering excellence by facilitating design reviews, improving tooling, and sharing knowledge within technical communities.

Support bids and pre-sales by estimating build effort, identifying technical risks and presenting engineering approaches to clients.

Mentor and develop early-career engineers, fostering an inclusive culture where everyone can do their best work.

What experience you’ll bring:

Proven success delivering complex digital services in the UK Government or other regulated industries.

Hands‑on expertise building microservice and event‑driven architectures on public cloud (AWS or Azure).

Strong knowledge of containers (Docker), Kubernetes, serverless, IaC (Terraform/CloudFormation) and automated pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins or AWS Code).

Experience designing, consuming and securing APIs (REST/GraphQL) and working with messaging or streaming platforms (Kafka or SNS/SQS).

Demonstrated ability to guide engineering teams, influence technical decisions and communicate clearly with non‑technical stakeholders.

Familiarity with agile delivery methods and a culture of continuous improvement.

Education and Experience:

Essential:

  • Extensive experience in a senior or lead software‑engineering role with responsibility for technical direction and delivery assurance.
  • Background in consulting, systems integration or technology leadership within public‑sector environments.
  • Eligibility to obtain or hold UK Security Check (SC) clearance (usually five years’ continuous UK residency).

Desirable:

  • Certifications in cloud platforms (AWS/Azure Professional) or DevOps (e.g., Kubernetes CKAD/CKA).
  • Knowledge of government frameworks such as the Digital Service Standard, GDS assessment criteria and Technology Code of Practice.
  • Degree in a technology‑related discipline or equivalent practical experience.
