Job summary

A local authority legal services provider is seeking an experienced Legal Professional to join their team on a temporary basis. The role involves providing high-quality legal advice, particularly in safeguarding and family law. Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years' experience in public sector legal work and be a qualified solicitor or legal executive. This full-time position requires the ability to manage complex legal matters and work collaboratively with stakeholders. The role offers 36 hours per week on-site work.

Job description
Job Summary

An experienced Legal Professional is required to join a Local Authority Legal Services team on a temporary basis to provide specialist legal advice and representation. The role will focus on areas relating to safeguarding family support and wider public sector governance. This is a full-time assignment based on-site ideal for an individual confident in delivering high-quality legal work within a fast-paced public sector environment.

Key Duties / Accountabilities
  • Provide high-quality legal advice, representation and support to client departments particularly in the area of safeguarding and family law.
  • Represent the authority in court proceedings and tribunals including case preparation and advocacy as required.
  • Manage a caseload of complex and sensitive legal matters independently ensuring deadlines are met and risks are mitigated.
  • Draft and review legal documents including court applications, contracts and formal correspondence.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, case law and best practice.
  • Work collaboratively with other legal professionals and stakeholders within the council and externally.
  • Ensure compliance with professional standards, council policies and procedures.
Skills / Experience
  • Minimum 2 years experience in public sector legal work ideally in safeguarding, family law or child protection.
  • Demonstrable experience of handling complex legal caseloads with minimal supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Children Act 1989 / 2004 Care Act 2014 and related case law.
  • Excellent communication, drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and work under pressure.
  • Familiarity with court processes, advocacy and case management systems in the public sector.
