Job description
Junior or Senior Clinical Fellow Emergency Medicine

The closing date is 18 January 2026

Are you looking for a career in Emergency Medicine in a large UK teaching hospital with a Major Trauma Centre?

The Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is excited to offer opportunities for motivated doctors to join our friendly Emergency Medicine team from 1st April 2026 for 12 months. One post is to cover maternity leave.

You will have the opportunity to work in a forward thinking, dynamic department committed to the Trust's ambition of developing staff and delivering outstanding healthcare outcomes for patients.

Depending on your experience and interview, you may be offered a Junior Fellow role on the Tier 2 (CT1/2) rota or a Tier 3 (CT3) rota which would be considered if you hold MRCEM. We may offer a Senior Fellow at Tier 4 (registrar) if you have the required experience in ED plus MRCEM, taking into consideration your interview. Opportunities exist for T3 clinicians to progress to Tier 4 if full MRCEM is obtained.

Please note you must be available to start on 1st April 2026 to align with our Resident doctor rotation, which includes induction to the Trust and a departmental induction on 2nd April that will be mandatory.

Main duties of the job

Working in our ED encompasses many management skills such as managing the shop floor, keeping to the four‑hour target and constantly reprioritising tasks.

You will be supported to work through competencies to develop portfolio evidence, meet your set objectives and work under the clinical direction of EM consultants who are present 24/7. All Fellows will have a monthly teaching day along with educational development time reflected on your rota, and you will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor.

What we can offer you as a Fellow in ED:

  • Monthly teaching
  • Workplace based assessments
  • Opportunities to get involved with teaching
  • Audit work and QIP's, etc.
  • Research opportunities
  • Potential for a secondment to other specialties based on your interest and placement availability

Our Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Europe, seeing around 195,000 new attendances annually across co‑located adult and Children’s and Young People’s departments. NUH comprises the Queen’s Medical Centre and the Nottingham City Hospital campuses.

Our forward‑thinking, research‑active Emergency Department delivers high‑standard care across a wide range of presentations. The Children’s ED sees about 44,000 children and young people each year.

Nottingham is a vibrant university city with excellent rail, road and tram links, and a host of cultural and sporting attractions.

Job responsibilities

For this round of recruitment, we are unable to accept applications that do not have at least two years experience in ED in the NHS. Clinical attachments do not count as NHS experience; applicants with only an attachment will not be considered.

We have clearly set out the essential criteria for the roles (please see below). You must meet all essential criteria to move to the short‑listing stage.

For a Junior post:

  • At least three years post MBBS (or equivalent) plus experience in an Emergency Department.
  • To be considered for Tier 3 (CT3), you need the MRCEM exam plus a minimum of two years in a pure ED setting in the NHS at CT1/2 level.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) qualification.

For a Senior post:

  • At least six years post MBBS (or equivalent) plus experience in an ED.
  • ALS and ATLS qualifications.
  • MRCEM exam (full).
  • At least two years experience in ED in the NHS at CT3 level or higher.

These are service posts, so they do not have educational approval, but you will be provided with excellent training and educational opportunities tailored to your needs.

We expect you to keep up to date with current knowledge and practice, attend clinical meetings within the department, and participate in audit and in‑service training of other professionals.

Clinical Fellows in the Emergency Department can expect to:

  • Build on previous experience and develop increased expertise in identifying, assessing and managing sick patients.
  • Gain experience in managing a wide variety of medical conditions, with appropriate decision‑making around admission, discharge and follow‑up.
  • Manage poly‑trauma patients and the concept of silver trauma.
  • Acquire additional skills such as fascia iliaca block, chest drain, etc.
  • Enhance communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues.
  • Keep up to date with mandatory training required for your role.
  • Participate in the annual appraisal process.

We have successfully supported many doctors who have come to work with us to gain places on training programmes. Let us know if this is your aim and we will do everything we can to help you get there. Alternatively, if you would like a longer‑term trust post or to take the CESR training pathway with NUH, we are happy to discuss this with you.
