Job description
Overview

This Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust’s Cardiology Junior Clinical Fellow post is primarily located at Hammersmith Hospital. The Cardiology Department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust provides a tertiary cardiology service for the London North West Region. A full range of cardiac services are provided including coronary care unit, cardiac catheterisation with complex coronary and structural intervention, complex pacing, electrophysiological studies and ablation, syncope services, advanced echocardiography, cardiac MRI, CT and nuclear imaging. The department also includes a tertiary Pulmonary Hypertension service. We maintain a 24/7 primary angioplasty and primary arrhythmia service. 43 cardiology consultants work at the trust across various cardiology sub-specialties.

The post‑holder will be one of 13 doctors working on a resident rota, ranging from F2 to pre‑ST3 trainees who have completed core training and hold relevant membership (e.g., MRCP). Typical post‑holders fall into two seniority levels: those who have completed intermediate medical training, hold full MRCP, and seek Cardiology experience before applying for a Cardiology NTN or a specialty with significant cardiovascular focus (acute medicine, ICM, EM, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine); and those at F3–ST2 level seeking Cardiology experience for future career development.

The role involves day‑to‑day management of patients on the Hammersmith Hospital cardiology wards (coronary care unit, cardiology ward, heart assessment centre, cardiac day ward, cardio‑geriatrics ward) under Consultant supervision. Post‑holders will gain experience in general and specialist Cardiology outpatient clinics such as electrophysiology, pulmonary hypertension, structural intervention, and syncope. Senior medical support is available 24/7, with on‑site Cardiology and Medical SpRs at all times including bank holidays.

Development of procedural skills will be encouraged, including central line insertion, arterial cannulation in unstable patients, ultrasound‑guided vascular access, and echocardiography. Those without previous echo experience may complete FEEL accreditation under consultant supervision; those with experience may begin a British Society of Echocardiography logbook.

At Imperial College Healthcare you can achieve extraordinary things with extraordinary people, working with leading clinicians pushing boundaries in patient care.

Become part of a vibrant team living our values - expert, kind, collaborative and aspirational. You’ll get an experience like no other and will fast forward your career.

Benefits include career development, flexible working and wellbeing, staff recognition scheme. Make use of optional benefits including Cycle to Work, car lease schemes, season ticket loan or membership options for onsite leisure facilities.
