Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Digital team at South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust for an experienced ICT Infrastructure Technician to support the implementation of a new Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. We are seeking a technically skilled, motivated, and adaptable individual with strong infrastructure experience and excellent problem-solving, communication, and organisational skills.

This role will focus on supporting the deployment of critical infrastructure across multiple sites, working closely with a selected supplier and internal teams. The post holder will play a key role in the Trust's digital transformation journey, contributing to the successful delivery of the Fit for the Future Programme, which aims to modernise and future-proof our digital capabilities while ensuring the CAD system is resilient, secure, and aligned with operational and clinical priorities.

The ICT Infrastructure Technician will be responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining infrastructure components, including servers, switches, and virtual environments, across two data centres and three operational contact centres. They will ensure the performance, security, scalability, and resilience of the CAD infrastructure, support disaster recovery planning, data protection measures, and system testing. They will act as a 3rd line technical expert throughout the project, providing hands-on support for incident resolution, infrastructure monitoring, and compliance with NHS Digital standards. Maintaining accurate technical documentation, supporting asset management processes, and collaborating with the CAD Infrastructure & Integration Architect and wider IT teams are also key responsibilities.

Technologies involved include VMware, Hyper-V, RAID, and failover/fallback systems.

This role is part of a high-priority programme with tight delivery timelines and complex interdependencies. The successful candidate will have substantial hands-on experience delivering infrastructure upgrades in large, multi-system environments with diverse stakeholders.

Requirements include a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience, along with formal training or experience in networks, hosting environments, and virtualized platforms. Advantageous qualifications include ITIL Foundation or higher, Microsoft or VMware certifications, and vendor certifications such as CompTIA Network+. Candidates should have substantial ICT infrastructure support experience in large or healthcare organizations, with expertise in physical and virtual servers, Windows Server, VMware ESXi, and virtual host platforms. Experience in service desk operations, server optimization, disaster recovery, and stakeholder engagement is essential. Experience with NHS systems or mission-critical platforms like CAD is advantageous.

Strong analytical and diagnostic skills, excellent communication, and a customer-focused approach are essential. Proficiency in ITSM tools, effective time management, and a commitment to continuous learning are required. Additional advantageous skills include supporting infrastructure test plans, mentoring junior staff, and delivering technical training or knowledge transfer sessions.

Benefits include:

  • Holiday entitlement of 27 days, rising to 29 days after 5 years' service and 33 days after 10 years' service, plus 8 bank holidays (pro rata for part-time).
  • Automatic enrolment into the NHS Pension Scheme.
  • Access to continual professional development within SCAS and the wider NHS.
  • Occupational Health support and access to Employee Assistance Programmes and Health and Wellbeing Teams.
  • NHS Discounts in over 200 stores.
  • Opportunity to join staff networking groups.

All new starters will attend a Corporate Induction held over one and a half days at one of our educational centres in Newbury, Bicester, or Whiteley. Specific details will be provided once your start date is confirmed.

We actively encourage applications from candidates with disabilities, members of the BAME, LGBTQ+, and Armed Forces communities. Requests for reasonable adjustments will be accommodated, and all applications from eligible candidates will be invited for interview and/or assessment.
