Job description

Our partner Manchester Secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), are seeking a committed and experienced Senior Learning Mentor (Level 4) to join our pastoral and SEND team.

This is a key role within our school, supporting pupils with SEMH, SEND and behavioural needs, leading learning mentors, and helping young people overcome barriers to learning. The successful candidate will work closely with the Student Services Manager, teachers, pastoral staff and external agencies.

About the Role

As a Senior Learning Mentor, you will take a lead role in delivering high-quality pastoral, behaviour and SEND support. You will plan and deliver targeted interventions, mentor pupils 1:1, and help manage behaviour, attendance and engagement across the school.

You will also supervise learning mentors, contribute to strategic planning, and support the smooth running of inclusion systems and pupil support processes within the PRU.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver pastoral, behaviour and SEMH interventions for pupils with additional needs
  • Provide 1:1 mentoring, emotional support and crisis de-escalation
  • Deliver small-group sessions including Literacy, Numeracy, PSHE/RSE, Boxall, therapeutic activities, outdoor learning and life-skills
  • Support reintegration, transitions and pupils working off timetable
  • Work alongside teachers to plan, deliver and evaluate intervention programmesMaintain accurate records relating to behaviour, progress and attendance
  • Liaise with parents/carers, external agencies and professionals
  • Promote inclusion, positive behaviour, resilience and engagement
  • Lead a small team of Learning Mentors, including supervision and performance monitoring
  • Support safeguarding, attendance systems and whole-school behaviour processes
  • Assist with educational visits, enrichment activities and off-site learning
Person Specification
  • Experience working in a PRU, SEMH, SEND or alternative provision
  • Strong behaviour management and the ability to support pupils with complex needs
  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Supporting Teaching & Learning
  • Good literacy and numeracy (Level 2 or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of child development, SEMH needs and the secondary curriculum
  • Ability to build positive, professional relationships with young people
  • Strong communication, teamwork and organisational skills
  • A calm, resilient, child-centred approach

A willingness to undertake HLTA-level responsibilities and ongoing training is essential.
