Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) brings an advanced Critical Care team to the most seriously ill and injured patients across the region, giving them the best possible chance of survival and recovery. The service is delivered in partnership between the HIOWAA Charity and University Hospital Southampton.

As part of our ongoing development, we are expanding our team and seeking experienced paramedics who are committed to personal development and delivering the highest standards of clinical care in challenging pre-hospital environments. Successful applicants will undertake our Critical Care Paramedic training programme, including enrolment at St George’s University on the Advanced Practice MSc.

Based initially at our airbase in Thruxton, and later at our new airbase at Southampton Airport, this is a varied and developmental role. Our clinicians are expected to be values-driven, collaborative, and dedicated to delivering outstanding care and achieving team excellence.

Role and responsibilities
  • Practice as a Trainee Critical Care Paramedic in partnership with a HEMS doctor or as part of a paramedic team to deliver enhanced care to high acuity patients in the pre-hospital setting.
  • Use collaborative and independent judgment to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage and evaluate clinical care and management of patients attended to by the Critical Care Team.
  • Work within the multidisciplinary team to deliver clinical practice, leadership, support, and structured teaching for multidisciplinary professionals to facilitate ongoing education, training and development.
  • Support specific service development, including the implementation of multidisciplinary guidelines and protocols, incorporating current best evidence in consultation with medical and paramedic staff for the care of pre-hospital emergency care patients.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for continuing professional development through work-based and service-provided training.
  • Undertake active and positive engagement with all stakeholders involved with the HIOWAA charity.
  • To work collaboratively with colleagues from local and neighbouring ambulance services to foster partnership working and the delivery of high-quality services.
Requirements
  • Experience as a paramedic and commitment to personal development.
  • Willingness to undertake the Critical Care Paramedic training programme and MSc (Advanced Practice) at St George’s University.
  • Ability to work in challenging pre-hospital environments and in a developing team.

To deliver specialised clinical practice within the field of pre-hospital emergency care, acting as a role model within the Critical Care Team.
