Job description
Overview

We are recruiting a Band 3 HCA for our Renal HDU.

The Imperial College Renal and Transplant Centre opened at the Hammersmith Hospital in November 2005 and has become the largest facility of its kind in Europe, offering a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services to our patient group.

De Wardener is the renal HDU, a hybrid ward that specialises in the care of renal patients who require intensive monitoring for highly complex needs. This includes patients who have had a kidney or a kidney and pancreas transplant and patients who require non-invasive ventilatory support such as CPAP, BiPAP and High flow oxygen and/or tracheostomy care and inotropic support.

There is also a ‘lines’ room on De Wardener where access for dialysis is inserted under imaging guidance (tunneled central vascular catheters for haemodialysis and peritoneal catheters). As a HCA you will have the opportunity to assist our Renal Surgeons and Renal consultants with this procedure.

We will support you to develop advanced assessment and management skills of highly complex acutely unwell patients that will provide a strong foundation to your career.

Responsibilities
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living when required, maintaining their privacy and dignity at all times.
  • Support patients with hygiene needs including hair washing, washing/bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, toileting and care of urinary catheters.
  • Promote continence and manage incontinence for patients where appropriate.
  • Measure and record routine observations of weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate and pain scores. Report any abnormalities and concerns to a Registered Nurse. If using the Early Warning Chart, report all triggers to a Registered Nurse.
  • Measure, record and report capillary blood glucose levels of patients when required.
  • Provide pressure area relief and mobilisation of patients.
  • Recognise when patients are in pain or discomfort and report to the nurse in charge.
  • Assist with fluid and dietary needs of patients including completion of menu cards, recording intake and output of fluids and solids, preparation for mealtimes and assistance with eating when required.
  • Prepare for and assist with clinical procedures.
  • Escort patients who are in a stable condition to other departments in the hospital for tests, investigations and treatments.
  • Be sensitive and supportive to the needs of bereaved relatives and friends in the event of a patient death. Assist in carrying out last offices with a Registered Nurse.
  • Perform venepuncture following appropriate training and assessment.
