Job description
Overview

We are recruiting a Band 3 HCA for our Renal HDU. The Imperial College Renal and Transplant Centre opened at the Hammersmith Hospital in November 2005 and is the largest facility of its kind in Europe, providing inpatient and outpatient renal services.

De Wardener is the renal HDU, a hybrid ward specialising in the care of renal patients requiring intensive monitoring for highly complex needs. This includes patients who have had a kidney or kidney and pancreas transplant and patients requiring non-invasive ventilatory support (CPAP, BiPAP, High flow oxygen) and/or tracheostomy care and inotropic support. There is a "lines" room where dialysis access is inserted under imaging guidance (tunneled central vascular catheters for haemodialysis and peritoneal catheters). As an HCA you will assist Renal Surgeons and Renal consultants with these procedures. We will support you to develop advanced assessment and management skills of highly complex acutely unwell patients to provide a strong foundation for your career.

Responsibilities
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living while maintaining privacy and dignity
  • Support with hygiene needs (hair washing, washing/bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, toileting, urinary catheter care)
  • Promote continence and manage incontinence where appropriate
  • Measure and record routine observations (weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, pain scores) and report abnormalities to a Registered Nurse; use the Early Warning Chart as required
  • Measure, record and report capillary blood glucose levels when required
  • Provide pressure area relief and assist with mobility
  • Recognise pain and discomfort and report to the nurse in charge
  • Assist with fluid and dietary needs, including meal preparation and recording intake and output
  • Prepare for and assist with clinical procedures
  • Escort stable patients to other departments for tests and treatments
  • Be sensitive and supportive to bereaved relatives and assist with last offices with a Registered Nurse
  • Perform venepuncture following appropriate training and assessment
Qualifications and Experience
  • Essential: QCF Level 3 in Health or equivalent (NVQ3, Advanced Apprenticeship); numerate; able to speak and write English to fulfil job requirements
  • Essential: Ability to work well within a team; caring approach
  • Desirable: Ability to work on own initiative; ability to perform venepuncture
  • Essential: Up-to-date experience in an acute care setting within the last 18 months; willingness to learn venepuncture
