Overview

An opportunity has arisen for a full-time and part-time Healthcare Assistant on Ward 4A. We are looking for a motivated, trustworthy and reliable individual to join our hardworking and dynamic team on Ward 4A. This is a busy, mixed medical ward specialising in liver disease. You will need good basic communication skills, and be happy to assist patients with all aspects of daily living and basic nursing care. We are looking for a team player to help improve and make a small difference to patients care with the aim to drive quality forward. This will require working shifts including weekends and nights as required.

Responsibilities
  • Support all individuals through effective communication
  • General bed making/making up of clean beds in readiness for new admissions, and operation beds. (Refer to policy for the care of mattresses and beds)
  • Clear and clean vacated bed spaces and prepare ready for use according to the ward/unit protocol
  • Prepare used linen bags for collection by Porters and ensure adequate supply of linen bags/skips ready for use
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in all areas
  • Collection of Blood products as required from laboratory
  • Safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps as per Trust policy
  • Be familiar with Trust policy and procedure for reporting clinical incidents, reporting of incidents if they occur
  • Provide support and assistance to new and junior members of staff
  • Supports members of the nursing team in the management of abusive and aggressive behaviour with supervision
  • Contribute to the Health, Safety and Security of individuals
  • Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and carry out all aspects of personal care and grooming (including emptying catheter bags)
  • Provision of patients toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained
  • Support of patients in managing incontinence
  • Measure patients fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts and report information to Registered Nurse
  • Preparation and serving of patient meals, drinks and snacks; assisting / feeding patients as necessary
  • Assist patients in completing menu forms and liaise with the Catering Department regarding meals required
  • Report patients’ dietary intake as indicated in the patient’s plan of care
  • Carry out movement and handling within safe practice guidelines from mandatory training and in relation to the patient’s manual handling plan
  • Enable patients to maintain/improve mobility using exercise and mobility appliances as directed by individual care plans
  • Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the Registered Nurse in conjunction with the patient’s plan of care
  • Obtain specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing
  • Escort patients to clinical departments within the hospital
  • Assist Registered Nurse in performing last offices
  • Conduct general observations of patients, reporting anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff
  • Initiate Basic Life Support techniques as appropriate and provide assistance to the registered nurse as required in prolonged resuscitation situations
  • Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and carers
Additional information

Band 2 positions will not be eligible for sponsorship as these roles will not meet the required skill level (RQF 3 or A level and above), despite having their salary increase. The team is part of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, comprising Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital & Royal Liverpool University Hospital, and is part of the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group.
