Job description

Handley James Chemical are proud to be once again engaged as the search partner to a growing chemical business based in the North West. Specialising in both the distribution and manufacture of a number of chemical products and offering an impressive wide range of chemical manufacturing capabilities on behalf of its customer base.

We are currently recruiting for an experienced EHS Advisor to join their team on site in Bury, this position is about driving towards excellence and directly contributing to the development and delivery of the group’s HSE and ESG Framework.

The HSE Advisor creates and leads initiatives that foster a proactive safety culture, enhance sustainability performance, and ensure compliance with ISO standards and regulatory requirements across all sites. In addition, the role holder will be expected to work closely with the Directors to provide strategic insights and performance updates that contribute to group-wide decision-making. At its core, this role is about leading by example and developing a culture of care supporting, coaching, and mentoring others to embed best practices and make safety and sustainability a shared responsibility across the organisation.

Responsibilities
  • Proactively lead and support all aspects of HSE compliance across the group, ensuring alignment with ISO 45001, 14001, and 9001.
  • Stay up to date with legislation and best practice guidance, ensuring continuous improvement of HSE standards ensuring key members are kept up to date on any key risks or changes.
  • Support and coordinate ISO and customer audits, ensuring continual improvement through findings and corrective action plans.
  • Develop, review, and maintain risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and safe systems of work.
  • Conduct investigations in a fair and consistent manner into incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Encouraging a proactive safety culture throughout the organisation through engagement, communication and visible leadership.
  • Acting as the key point of contact for HSE advice, supporting managers and employees in understanding their roles and responsibilities.
  • Working closely with managers to identify HSE risks, implementing pragmatic solutions that improve safety performance and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure training records are in place and up to date and oversee the training suite, assign modules, monitor completion, and maintain accurate records.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, induction sessions, and targeted training to support a safe working culture across the business and improve workforce knowledge and competency.
Candidate Requirements
  • Minimum NEBOSH General Certificate (NEBOSH Diploma or Environmental Diploma desirable).
  • Proven experience in a manufacturing or chemical environment within a similar position.
  • Familiarity with ISO management systems and UK HSE legislation.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to work independently.
  • Strategic thinker with a collaborative mindset.
  • Exhibits a high level of emotional intelligence and coaching capability, fostering a culture of growth, accountability, and continuous improvement.

In return our client is offering a salary of c£40,000pa, bonus and benefits.
