Head of Operations (Confidential Appointment)

Location: Cambridgeshire
Sector: Building Services / Engineering Operations
Reporting to: Managing Director

We are recruiting on behalf of a well‑established building services organisation for a Head of Operations to lead and develop a multi‑disciplinary operations function covering plumbing, electrical and air conditioning services across residential and commercial projects.

This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for operational delivery, team performance, customer satisfaction and financial efficiency.

The Role

As Head of Operations, you will oversee the day‑to‑day performance of the Operations Department, managing engineers, coordinators and key stakeholders to ensure high‑quality service delivery. You will act as a senior representative of the business, working closely with clients, suppliers and internal teams while reporting directly to the Managing Director.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, schedule, and direct engineering teams to meet service demand and customer expectations
  • Recruit, train, manage and develop operations coordinators and team members
  • Oversee quality standards, productivity and continuous improvement across operations
  • Conduct performance reviews, appraisals and set improvement objectives
  • Establish and maintain training programmes aligned with procedures and safety standards
  • Communicate daily with mechanical, electrical and air conditioning teams to ensure effective resource planning
  • Review work orders, invoices, time reports and labour usage to ensure accuracy and cash flow efficiency
  • Liaise with suppliers regarding warranties, product issues and material availability
  • Ensure parts and materials are ordered and available to meet project deadlines
  • Attend senior management meetings and contribute to company‑wide objectives
  • Ensure all departmental policies, procedures and compliance standards are followed
About You

You will be an experienced operational leader with a strong background in building services or engineering environments. You are commercially aware, highly organised and comfortable operating in a fast‑paced, customer‑focused setting.

Essential Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years’ management experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Post‑secondary education in a trade, technical or related discipline
  • Working knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems
  • Strong leadership and people‑management skills
  • Excellent communication, customer service and conflict‑management abilities
  • High level of organisation with strong attention to detail
  • Confident using MS Word, Excel, Outlook and general business systems
  • Proactive mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Professional appearance and ability to lead by example
  • Valid driving licence with a clean record
  • Flexibility to work non‑standard hours when required
  • Ability to perform under pressure and manage competing priorities
