Job Description

The role of Head of Engineering is a critical role at TI. The Engineering team provides all engineering expertise within our business; and supports OFTO bidding, operational assets and development projects. We are seeking an individual who is technically accomplished and a recognised technical lead within the industry, commercially aware, ambitious, and driven with an ability to manage and solve problems. You should also have the necessary skills to manage a highly capable team of engineers. You will contribute to the fast growth and success of the company, by ensuring that construction projects are delivered to time, quality and budget; and by ensuring new acquisitions undergo thorough due diligence. The role will also support the efficient operation of assets and in all aspects of the work maintaining the highest levels of HSE.

Your Role

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to :

  • Managing the Engineering team; line management, workforce planning, performance management, day‑to‑day team management.
  • Ensuring the team has the necessary skills and tools to do their work effectively and to meet the company’s future needs.
  • Being a centre of excellence within the organisation and upholding the high standards and entrepreneurial attitude that the company is widely recognised for.
  • Team responsibilities
    • Ensuring technical compliance with industry codes.
    • Reviewing technical reports and carrying out power system investigations.
    • Formulating technical policy.
    • Technical investigations and defect claims.
    • Maintaining technical databases.
    • Interfacing with OEM / O&M contractors on technical issues.
    • Interfacing with NETSO / DNOs regarding outage planning.
    • Assisting in co‑ordinating activities and maintaining the SHEQ systems (ISO9001, OHSAS18001, ISO55000 and ISO14001) across the organisation and managing ongoing compliance with the company’s ISO certification.
    • Design input to project works.
    • Technical input to future transmission bidding processes and management of the technical due‑diligence process.
    • Weekly and monthly reporting to the Head of Asset Management.
Team Leadership
  • Lead, coach and develop Direct Reports to achieve department goals and objectives.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative culture within your Team based on our Company Values.
  • Conduct regular 1 : 1’s with Direct Reports focused on individual and department work objectives.
  • Provide regular feedback to team members and others.
  • Set clear performance objectives and goals for Direct Reports.
  • Identify training needs and opportunities for professional development within your Team.
  • Implement learning plans and training programs designed to enhance the skills and experience within your Team, partnering with the People Team where necessary.
  • Participate in the recruitment process by interviewing candidates and making hiring decisions when required.
  • Manage the workload distribution within your Team and ensure resources are allocated efficiently.

Education, Work Experience & Qualifications
  • Electrical Engineering to Degree level and a member of the relevant professional institution, preferably a Chartered Engineer.
  • 10 years experience in the UK electricity supply industry, including:
    • Experience of project management / development.
    • Detailed asset specific knowledge : e.g. transformers, cables, switchgear, light current (protection and SCADA), offshore structures.
    • Knowledge of Grid Code / SO‑TO code.
    • Experience of O&M activities within the power or offshore transmission sector.
  • Experience of submarine cable surveys, reburial and repair preparedness (beneficial).
  • IOSH, NEBOSH or other relevant safety qualifications (beneficial).
