A leading NHS trust in the UK seeks a full-time Glaucoma Fellow to partake in a comprehensive training program aimed at enhancing surgical skills and patient management in glaucoma. You will engage in clinics, research, and support the training of junior staff. The role offers exposure to surgical procedures and opportunities for professional development. Full GMC registration is required. This position provides NHS benefits and flexible working arrangements.
Applications are invited for a full time Glaucoma Fellow appointment suitable for senior ophthalmology trainees who wish to pursue subspecialty training in glaucoma.
The goal of this fellowship training is to complement the basic knowledge gained in core specialty training in ophthalmology and to provide you with greater exposure to the diagnosis and management of a wide range of glaucoma disorders. There is great emphasis on clinical and surgical hands‑on training to prepare you for a consultant post. We will endeavour to provide 3 operating lists with the three consultant ophthalmologists who specialise in glaucoma.
The length of the educational program is 12 months (from August 2026 until August 2027) of full time education, subject to satisfactory performance review after 6 months. This period may be extended if mutually agreed. This time includes appropriate short periods for vacation, special assignments, or exceptional individual circumstances approved by the supervisor. Ophthalmology requires an intensive continuum of training therefore it should not be interrupted by frequent and/or prolonged periods of absence.
You will be encouraged to take part in audit and research and to publish and present in the meetings depending on individual enthusiasm and ability.
The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.
This role provides an excellent exposure to surgery with opportunities to improve techniques in the fields of glaucoma filtration surgery, bleb management, MIGS, cyclodiode laser therapy and phacoemulsification. Glaucoma tube implantation is occasionally performed and the aim would be for the Fellow to be involved with such cases as appropriate.
The Fellow will be encouraged to take an active role in the day to day supervision of the junior medical staff/medical students and to contribute to their teaching.
All employees, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.
