Overview

Geospatial Data Engineer – Location: Remote Working (UK-based); Contract Length: 3 months initially; Daily Rate: Market Rates (Outside IR35).

Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced FME specialist to support our client's engineering team in delivering advanced geospatial solutions for suitability modelling. You will play a key role in evolving their existing ArcGIS Pro and FME-based workflows, helping our client to migrate from traditional vector-based geoprocessing to a grid/hexagonal data model for suitability analysis. This is a contract role for an initial 3 months for an experienced practitioner who can quickly add value, working collaboratively with their in-house engineers while bringing specialist FME development and optimisation expertise. Candidates must be comfortable working independently as a contractor, while contributing effectively to a collaborative project team.

The Project

Our client's current platform supports suitability modelling for renewable energy projects and at the moment constraints are processed as vector overlays within ArcGIS Pro and analysed in FME to generate weighted suitability outputs. The next phase of development requires re-engineering these workbenches to operate on a grid/hex framework for improved scalability and analytical flexibility.

Skills and Experience

• Proven experience delivering complex FME workflows in production environments.
• Strong knowledge of geoprocessing methods and spatial data structures, including vector, raster and gridded/hexagonal approaches.
• Familiarity with suitability modelling or spatial multi-criteria analysis (SMCA) highly desirable.
• Hands-on experience integrating FME with Esri ArcGIS Pro and related geospatial ecosystems.
• Ability to troubleshoot, optimise and restructure legacy FME workbenches.
• Strong understanding of spatial data formats, ETL processes and geospatial data management.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

• Designing, building and optimising FME workbenches to support transformation from vector overlays to grid/hex-based data processing.
• Collaborating with our client's GIS Engineering team to understand requirements and translate them into efficient, maintainable FME workflows.
• Implementing data transformation, validation and automation processes to ensure accuracy and scalability of suitability models.
• Advising on best practices in FME performance tuning, modular workflow design and reusability of components.
• Supporting integration with ArcGIS Pro plugins and ensuring compatibility with downstream analytical workflows.
• Providing knowledge transfer, documentation and mentoring to internal staff as required.

NB: Candidates must be eligible for BPSS security clearance which will be processed following successful interviews (5-7 days).
