Overview

GCSE English & Functional Skills Lecturer — FE College, West London (Uxbridge/Hayes). Full-time, permanent. £32,455 – £45,260 (inc. London weighting). Closing date: 7 October 2025.

We are seeking an inspiring and dedicated GCSE English & Functional Skills Lecturer to join our English department. You will deliver GCSE and Functional Skills English to vocational learners aged 16–18 as well as a growing cohort of adult students. This is a rewarding opportunity to support learners who are combining vocational studies with essential English qualifications, helping them progress to higher education or employment. You will join a collaborative and experienced team, committed to innovation, sharing best practice, and engaging students who may be retaking their GCSEs.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver GCSE and Functional Skills English to vocational learners aged 16–18 and adult students.
  • Support learners who are combining vocational studies with essential English qualifications.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and innovative English department, sharing best practice and engaging students who may be retaking GCSEs.
Qualifications and experience
  • A degree in English or a related subject (or Level 3 qualification with 2+ years’ proven English/literacy teaching experience).
  • CELTA or equivalent qualification.
  • Level 5 teaching qualification (DET, PGCE) or willingness to work towards one with college support.
  • Experience teaching GCSE, Functional Skills English, EFL, ESOL or literacy, ideally within an FE setting.
  • Ability to inspire reluctant learners, manage challenging behaviour, and deliver engaging lessons both in-person and online.
  • Strong communication, classroom management, and IT skills.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, safeguarding, and ongoing professional development.
  • Flexibility to teach one evening class weekly (Thursday until 9pm).
