Job Description

Costain provides Engineering and Design services to the Energy, Water, Defence, and Transport Sectors. We have exciting opportunities available to join our growing Energy team, working to accelerate the energy transition and delivering traditional projects to optimize our clients' assets and extend their useful life, both onshore and offshore.

We are seeking Study Managers experienced in delivering front-end scopes, including feasibility assessments, concept selection, and Pre-FEED studies, starting at the earliest stages of project development.

The Study Manager will lead multi-disciplinary teams across one or more studies, working with clients ranging from major energy companies to specialist project developers. They will serve as the main interface with the client's project team, fostering collaboration to achieve project goals, building strong relationships, and growing workstreams and new opportunities.

Costain's Energy team delivers optimized solutions in energy production, transition, and related industries, including oil & gas, energy storage, carbon capture, hydrogen, fuel switching, and emissions reduction. The team focuses on early-phase project solutions and developing necessary technologies, with specialists in process, mechanical, safety, and environmental design working closely with engineering teams and partners.

This role will be based in our Aberdeen office three days a week.

Responsibilities
  1. Manage delivery of early-phase studies, ensuring quality, budget, and schedule adherence.
  2. Act as the primary client interface for study delivery, understanding project objectives, constraints, and decision-making processes.
  3. Coordinate multidisciplinary technical and commercial inputs for robust recommendations, considering technical, safety, environmental, cost, schedule, and risk factors.
  4. Ensure client needs are met, managing changes to scope, timelines, or budgets.
  5. Assist clients in developing strategies for energy transition, supported by innovation and technology.
  6. Identify resource needs and support resource planning across projects.
  7. Collaborate with project controls for performance reporting.
  8. Work with cost estimating teams to develop cost estimates, understand uncertainties, and identify risks and opportunities.
  9. Prepare and review key project and technical deliverables to ensure high quality.
  10. Support performance management and development of team engineers and consultants.
  11. Develop relationships with customers, supply chain, and third parties; represent Costain in discussions and meetings.
  12. Support business development efforts to secure repeat and new business.
  13. Ensure compliance with company policies, legislation, and standards for Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment.
  14. This role requires travel to various sites and offices as needed, with flexible working arrangements based on project needs.
Qualifications
  • First degree in a relevant engineering discipline, preferably Chemical Engineering; other disciplines considered with relevant experience.
  • Chartered Engineer preferred, with over 10 years' experience, including significant UK energy infrastructure and facilities development, ideally in consultancy or contracting.
  • Experience in UK energy industry regulation.
  • Knowledge of energy production, processing, and decarbonization technologies.
  • Strong problem-framing and evaluation skills, with ability to guide teams in developing solutions.
  • Awareness of process safety and environmental considerations.
  • Experience in project cost estimation and interfacing with estimating teams.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of project execution strategies.
