Job description
Overview

This exciting opportunity would suit a trainee with a background in anaesthesia and an interest in clinical simulation and education. The post is supported by the Division of Anaesthesia and Theatres and requires the applicant to have completed RCOA Basic Level Training in anaesthesia and hold their Primary FRCA qualification.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to assist in the further development of our Trust-wide simulation programme. The Trust has invested heavily in the development of a Simulation Suite and Clinical Skills laboratory over the last ten years. Simulation-based clinical training has since become embedded into medical education across many divisions. The role includes regular delivery of simulation training sessions, both in the Simulation Suite and across multiple hospital sites and specialities. There would also be a significant component of the post devoted to the expansion of the Trust clinical simulation facility. Time will be set‑aside for the post‑holder to undertake audit and/or research in the field of clinical simulation under the supervision of the Trust simulation lead. Funding will be available for a related PGCE.

In addition to simulation, the successful candidate would partake in the senior anaesthetic or obstetric trainee on‑call rota, alongside ST‑level anaesthetic trainees. The registrar rota comprises supervision of more junior anaesthetic trainees, cover of the Intensive Care Unit and support for the resident obstetric anaesthetic trainee as required. The post‑holder would also be expected to deliver approximately one‑two sessions of elective clinical anaesthesia each week.

The Trust employs 5,000+ staff, has a budget of £380 million and 750 beds. We work with health and social care organisations – including NHS Kernow and NHS England – to ensure local healthcare needs are met. The Trust has teaching hospital status as part of the University of Exeter Medical School. Keeping at the forefront of medical advances, we continually develop clinical services and are committed to maximising the range of specialist care offered locally.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the Trust Simulation programme in conjunction with the Trust Simulation leads.
  • Responsibility for Academic Foundation doctors in Simulation posts.
  • Assist current simulation training leads in the delivery of simulation training throughout the Trust.
  • Demonstrate and teach technical aspects of operating simulators to faculty members and others.
  • Run and debrief current simulation training sessions in conjunction with the simulation technician.
  • Run clinical skills training using the Trust part‑task trainers.
  • Actively participate in the Peninsula Simulation Network.
  • Direct Anaesthetic Crisis Resource Management, Managing Emergencies in Paediatric Anaesthesia (MEPA) and Anaesthesia Novice Training courses with support from the Trust Simulation lead.
  • Assist simulation technician and secretary with maintenance of simulation databases and educational resources.
  • Audit simulation activity within the Trust.
  • Publish papers and lead projects in simulation.
  • Complete PGClinEd if chosen.
  • Depending on departmental requirements, operate lists across all surgical specialties with a patient mix suitable for solo practice by a trainee at CT2–ST3 level or above.
  • Join a rota for resident cover of the CT level or ST level anaesthetic or obstetric anaesthetic service, supervising junior anaesthetic residents, covering the intensive care unit and supporting the obstetric anaesthetic resident as required.
Qualifications
  • Completed RCOA Basic Level Training in anaesthesia.
  • Primary FRCA qualification.
  • Interest and background in clinical simulation and education.
  • Willingness to undertake PGCE funding if required.
  • Ability to work full‑time or job‑share, as desired.
Benefits
  • Optional pension and life assurance.
  • Dedicated Childcare Coordination Team.
  • Renowned educational links to help realise full potential.
