Job description

Estimator- We are working with a commercial and domestic building contractor who delivers a range of commercial and domestic building services to clients throughout Cambridgeshire and the surrounding area.

The Role
  • Analyse drawings, specifications, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials, and labour estimates in line with deadlines.
  • Calculate material quantities and costs, labour costs, and an achievable project time frame.
  • Sourcing quotes from suppliers and contractors within a specified time frame.
  • Assess risk levels associated with a project and advise on risk mitigation strategies.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with contractors and vendors.
  • Negotiate labour contracts and schedules.
  • Organise and lead pre‑start meetings with the contracts team and estimating team.
  • Produce programme of works/GANTT Chart using project.
  • Produce bill of quantities for Contracts Assistants to hand over at the internal pre‑start contracts meeting.
  • Monitor project costs throughout the construction process and ensure projects stay within budget.
  • Oversee contract administration, including managing variations and change orders.
  • Handle disputes and claims related to project costs.
  • Liaise with clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to gather essential project information.
  • Evaluate and negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors for competitive pricing.
  • Monitor project costs and conduct regular financial reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
Requirements
  • Driving license and own transport – you will be required to make site visits.
  • Proven experience as an Estimator and/or Quantity Surveyor in the construction industry.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Highly organised and able to work well within a fast‑paced environment.
  • Knowledge of the building industry and building supplies would be an advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and regulations.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., Degree or HND in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or similar).
  • Membership of professional bodies (e.g., RICS or CIOB) is advantageous but not essential.
