Job description

Great British Nuclear (GBN) is a new government arm's length body supporting the delivery of Britain's energy security and net zero, making sure that we can power Britain from Britain sustainably. It has been set up to turn nuclear ambition into reality. GBN's first step was to start the technology selection process for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in July 2024. SMRs can potentially be quicker to deploy and less expensive to build than traditional nuclear power plants because they are smaller, have factory based modular manufacturing, and more flexible deployment options. GBN is aiming to deliver fast, based on a supportive and collaborative culture which values equality and diversity and creates an inclusive workplace. It draws on deep nuclear expertise – its Executive Committee has over 100 years of nuclear experience in this country and abroad.

Working in the permissions team you will support the EIA Manager in managing and co‑ordinating the development of the environmental baseline; development of BNG, mitigation and compensation measures; delivering relevant sections of permissions applications (permits, TCPAs, DCO etc.) associated with new nuclear power station developments. As the projects develop the post holder may be required to take complete ownership of the aforementioned activities for a particular project site overseen by the EIA Manager. The GBN main project office is situated in Warrington. It will be necessary to be present at the Warrington office, or an equivalent project location, no fewer than 2 days every two weeks on average. In addition the role may require visits to GBN project sites, to our London office and to other locations as necessary in order to fulfil this role.

Responsibilities
  • Act a technical lead for collecting environmental baseline information and environmental impact assessment for allocated parts of the GBN nuclear new build programme, under the oversight of the EIA Manager.
  • Support the environmental requirements of early site‑based permissions activities, including leading the development of impact assessments.
  • Project management of environmental services for the full scope of major permissions including survey, modelling and assessment work and final document production.
  • Ensure alignment between assessment assumptions and the baseline project scope and ensure close coordination between emerging assessments and project development/design activities.
  • Develop strong working relationships with other members of the permissions team and wider project team, in particular subject‑matter experts across planning, environment, marine, transport disciplines and site‑specific design (construction and operations).
  • Engage with external stakeholders (including members of the public, local authorities and statutory stakeholders) in relation to environmental matters.
  • Manage overall delivery to cost, time, quality and to meet defined objectives.
  • Identify, specify and manage contracts as required to support delivery, working closely with technical specialists and commercial management colleagues.
  • Provide active input into the development of GBN's organisational intelligence, supporting or leading on internal communication activities and the development of enduring records.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrable technical knowledge and experience of the legal and regulatory requirements for infrastructure projects, including nuclear new build projects.
  • Track record of delivering projects on time and on budget.
  • Understanding the needs of quality and how quality is assured and controlled in their area of expertise.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, able to develop relationships and maintain effective networks.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Earth Sciences, Ecology or a related technical field.
