Job description
English Teacher – Full-Time | County Durham | £170–£250 per day (paid to scale)

Are you an inspiring English teacher ready to bring Shakespeare, Steinbeck, and 21st-century texts to life? We’re working with a forward-thinking secondary school in County Durham that’s looking for a talented English specialist to join their team from September.

This is a full-time role for the full academic year, with pay to scale (£170–£250 per day). The school prides itself on a strong English department, supportive leadership, and students who are eager to learn when teaching is engaging and consistent.

About the school

Located in the heart of County Durham, this secondary school is known for its inclusive ethos and commitment to developing every student’s potential. Staff describe it as collaborative, with a leadership team who genuinely value their teachers’ input. The English department is well-resourced, passionate about literature, and big on sharing ideas to make lessons creative and impactful.

With a focus on both academic progress and student wellbeing, this is the kind of environment where teachers can thrive, not just survive.

Your role will include:
  • Planning and delivering engaging English lessons across KS3 and KS4 (with the potential for KS5 depending on experience)

  • Differentiating lessons to support a range of learning needs, including SEND and EAL students

  • Preparing pupils for GCSE English Language and Literature exams with confidence and clarity

  • Creating a positive, structured classroom environment where all students feel able to contribute

  • Working closely with department colleagues to develop schemes of work and share best practice

  • Taking part in wider school life, including meetings, CPD, and extracurricular activities if desired

What we’re looking for:
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS/QTLS) and strong subject knowledge in English

  • Experience teaching English at secondary level in the UK

  • A creative, engaging approach to teaching with the ability to inspire all learners

  • Strong behaviour management skills with a calm, consistent style

  • A team player who’s keen to contribute to the wider school community

  • FREE access to our online CPD Academy

  • Thrive training available at no cost to boost your classroom toolkit
