Job Title: Engineering Technician - Mechanical

Role Type: Full time / Permanent

Role ID: SF68215

At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as an Engineering Technician at our Devonport Royal Dockyard site.

The role

As an Engineering Technician - Mechanical, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll be part of a skilled team responsible for regenerating Royal Navy Type 23 Frigates during deep maintenance periods. You’ll bring systems and equipment back to life – replacing the role traditionally held by sailors in the dockyard.

This hands‑on, high impact role is suitable for an experienced mechanical engineering technician, whose technical expertise will directly contribute to national defence readiness. It’s also a chance to grow your skills, work on complex marine systems and be part of something bigger. Day‑to‑day, you’ll assist in the maintenance of mechanical systems, report equipment status and restore functionality through defect resolution by:

  • Conducting maintenance of dedicated Mechanical systems and equipment
  • Reporting on system equipment and condition to ensure stakeholder awareness
  • Rectifying defects and restoring equipment to operational condition

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience of the Engineering Technician - Mechanical
  • Previous experience as an RN Engineering Technician is advantageous but not essential. We welcome applications from candidates with a strong background in the maintenance and repair of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job - you will be required to work onboard ships to carry out maintenance duties on a regular basis.
  • Proactive attitude and good communication skills
  • Adaptable and flexible across a variety of Marine Maintenance tasks
  • IT skills and ability to generate defect reports and populate information into a maintenance management system
Qualifications for the Engineering Technician - Mechanical
  • Qualified to ONC, Level 3 NVQ, BTEC, or an equivalent certification in a mechanical engineering discipline
  • Demonstrable equivalent experience within an engineering environment
Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.

Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held.
