Salary: £90,000 - £99,829 + pension 12%, healthcare, 25 days holiday

Project

This is a unique opportunity to join HS2 Ltd (the client organisation) on the UK's largest infrastructure programme. You'll be working within the CSC (Costain, Skanska, Strabag) Main Works Civils contract, a £4.2bn London Tunnels project.

The scope includes:

  • London Tunnels Main Works Civils Contract consists of 13 miles of twin-bore tunnels (26 miles total) between West Ruislip and Euston, using six Tunnel Boring Machines (five operating simultaneously), along with shafts, green tunnels, under bridges, cross passages, utility works, and associated infrastructure.
  • 4 years left on the project.
  • With the bulk of the TBM tunnelling completed the works are varied: tunnel fit-out, shafts, RC Structures and other associated works with 4 years left.
The Role

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the Lead Project Engineer / Civils Engineering Manager is responsible for technical assurance, engineering leadership, and risk-based oversight within the Integrated Project Team (IPT).

The main focus of the role is Construction Assurance, with much of the design assurance completed. The role will also ensure civil assets are constructed to allow integration with the rail systems (track, OLE, signalling, telecoms, power, etc.).

You will:

  • Lead risk-based technical assurance, ensuring assets meet HS2 requirements, standards, and sponsor obligations.
  • Act as NEC3 Supervisor and CDM Principal Designer Representative, overseeing safety and compliance.
  • Provide technical leadership during the delivery phase, assuring that design and construction meet quality, safety, and programme requirements.
  • Work closely with Commercial & Project leads to assess change, risk, and cost impacts.
  • Support commissioning and handover of complex assets into operation.
  • Promote best practice, innovation, and cost efficiencies across design and construction teams.
  • System Integration - ensure civil assets are constructed and delivered to allow for integration with railway systems (track, power, M&E, OLE, Telecoms, etc.).
  • Technical Construction Assurance and Quality Assurance of built assets.
  • Engage and collaborate with multiple stakeholders, including Network Rail, TfL, Local Authority, contractors, and regulators.
Key Challenges
  • Scale & complexity - managing hundreds of major assets, and the size of the project.
  • System Integration - ensure civil assets will integrate successfully with the rail systems.
  • Stakeholder interfaces - working with national regulators and third parties (Network Rail / TfL, Local Authority, etc.).
  • Time-critical decision-making - unblocking delivery and ensuring programme momentum.
Candidate Profile

We are seeking a delivery-focused engineering leader with experience across major civil infrastructure.

Essential:

  • Civil engineering degree (Chartered Engineer status or working towards ideal).
  • Significant experience on large-scale infrastructure: highways, rail, tunnels, airports, nuclear, or water / Tideway projects.
  • Useful to have previous rail / rail system appreciation.
  • Strong understanding of UK construction regulations, CDM, and assurance frameworks.
  • Proven ability to lead technical delivery, manage risks, and solve complex engineering challenges.
  • Stakeholder management expertise in a multi-disciplinary, co-located environment.
  • Commercial awareness and experience of change management under NEC3 contracts.

Desirable:

  • Experience representing a client organisation or principal designer.
  • Track record in leading technical assurance on multi-billion pound rail programmes.
Future Progression

This role offers exceptional career opportunities beyond delivery of Area South. With 10 years remaining on the HS2 programme, you could progress into leadership positions across:

  • Major stations (Euston, Old Oak Common, Curzon Street)
  • Rail systems (14 packages across signalling, track, power, M&E)
