Job description

British Sugar is a home‑grown success story and one of the most efficient and competitive beet processers in the world. Around 3,500 farmers based in East Anglia and the East Midlands supply our four advanced manufacturing sites with eight million tonnes of sugar beet every year. We, in turn, make this in to over 1 million tonnes of sugar, serving customers across the UK, Ireland and increasingly growing commercially in the EU and world sugar markets.

Graduate Electrical Engineer Programme

Duration: 2 years

Locations: Bury St Edmunds

Salary: £42,000 per annum

Powering a world‑class manufacturing business.

At British Sugar, electrical engineering powers everything we do. Our sites combine advanced power generation, energy recovery, and distribution systems to produce up to 85 megawatts of electricity — keeping our factories running safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

As a Graduate Electrical Engineer, you’ll design, maintain, and develop the electrical infrastructure that supports the production of over a million tonnes of sugar each year — a true example of engineering on an industrial scale.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Gain experience in power generation and distribution, including steam and gas turbine systems.
  • Work with high‑voltage and low‑voltage networks, transformers, and switchgear.
  • Support automation and control systems, from digital protection to modern control technologies.
  • Contribute to upgrade and improvement projects focused on energy efficiency and sustainability.
  • Take part in capital projects — from design and specification through testing, commissioning, and delivery.
What You Will Need
  • A minimum 2:1 degree (or predicted) in Electrical, Electronic, Power, or Energy Engineering.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles to diagnose issues and suggest practical solutions.
  • An interest in large‑scale industrial systems and how energy supports sustainable production.
  • A strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Clear communication and teamwork skills — able to collaborate and share ideas effectively.
  • Flexibility to be based at and travel between any of our UK sites.
  • The right to work in the United Kingdom.
  • Alignment with our values: staying safe, driving to action, working together, respecting each other, and being open and flexible.
