Job description

WBA Automation is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Electrical Controls Systems Engineer to join our growing team in Reading, Pennsylvania. You will play a key role in driving improvements in safety, quality, and efficiency. You’ll work alongside a skilled team of engineers and technicians to design, program, and implement automated control systems for custom production equipment.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with hands-on experience in PLCs, HMIs, motion control systems, and industrial automation who enjoys taking a project from concept through commissioning.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement power distribution and control systems for manufacturing and production equipment
• Create detailed electrical schematics, panel layouts, and system wiring diagrams
• Program and integrate PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.), HMIs, VFDs, and safety devices into automated systems
• Generate complete and accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for electrical control systems
• Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 70, NFPA 79, UL 508A)
• Provide on-site support for equipment installation, debugging, and commissioning
• Collaborate with customers and cross-functional teams throughout the project lifecycle
• Assist in project scoping and quoting phases with the product management team
• Stay current on automation trends, control components, and industry best practices

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
• Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience in control systems design and integration
• Proficient in PLC, HMI, and VFD programming and troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.)
• Experience with motion control systems including VFDs and servo drives
• Strong understanding of electrical control systems including relay logic, control networks, and automation principles
• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN for schematic design
• Solid project management and multitasking skills, with ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills—able to convey complex technical information clearly
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
• Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail
• Ability to interpret mechanical system behavior and apply effective control strategies
