Electrical Building Services Design Engineer
Contract position
Location: Hybrid working, office in Manchester (potential for flexible working location)
Duration: Initial 12 month contract
The role involves the production and review of technical solutions for our Large Transmission Solutions business.
The role offers a collaborative team environment with significant interaction and coordination with other design disciplines on a daily basis. The selected individual will provide solutions and technical input to live projects, with the capability to self-deliver solutions and provide governance on proposals from others. The role requires planning and delivery of work packages on time and to budget. It is a varied role requiring a technically excellent, reliable individual with attention to detail and the ability to identify value opportunities. Predominantly office based, but occasional site visits may be required to address construction-level issues.
Responsibilities
- Input into the detailing and specification of auxiliary systems to ensure compliance with contractual & legal requirements, customer specifications, industry standards and best practice. These would generally comprise:
- Fire Detection Systems
- Small power, lighting and electrical sub-distribution
- Security, CCTV and access systems
- Review client-supplied enquiry documents, specifications.
- Approve technical specification of auxiliary systems pre and post contract award for HV substation projects in line with relevant standards.
- Evaluate supplier’s technical documents during tender stage.
- Review and approve supplier’s drawings and design documents during project delivery stage.
- Provide auxiliary system technical expertise to the engineering department.
- Undertake design reviews of subcontractor design packages and report on compliance with technical standards.
- Work closely with the engineering planner to develop/review the project programme.
- Provide input to the design and project risk registers.
- Takes ownership and accountability for the area of responsibility.
- Collaborate with counterpart MBS engineers to provide cross-disciplinary resource when required to ensure all projects are fully resourced.
- Respond to the ideas, concerns and needs of direct reports.
- Support professional development to maximise the potential of direct reports.
- Manage own time and budgets to be productive in the workplace.
Qualifications
- HNC / HND / Degree in Electrical Engineering or Building Services.
- BS7671 (18th edition) certification.
- Significant experience designing solutions for industrial applications.
- Experience designing in Dialux.
- Competent in the use of Amtech and/or Hevacomp.
- Fully conversant with the latest standards & technologies.
- AutoCAD / Revit competence.
- Beneficial but not mandatory: City & Guilds qualifications in Electrical Installation, Inspection Testing and Verification, among others.
- Beneficial but not mandatory: contract awareness and ability to formulate “Scope of Service” documents for third-party consultants.
- Ability to organise work to meet deadlines and respond promptly to information requests.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work and make decisions with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of MS Office.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach.
- Willingness to undertake additional training to keep skills up to date with latest standards and practices.
