Job description
Overview

We are seeking a results‑driven, audience‑focused Editorial Director to lead Yahoo News UK. In this role, you will define the editorial vision and lead a talented team that curates stories from scores of UK and global partners, while producing memorable and relevant original content for British audiences – including unique editorial franchises such as Unapologetically, Is It Worth Watching? and Styled by Nicky. This editor will be hands‑on – managing and mentoring a small team of editors and writers, as well as a large network of contributors and freelancers – to deliver high‑quality, high‑interest stories that resonate with UK audiences across News, Lifestyle and Entertainment. Top candidates combine sharp editorial judgement with a data‑informed mindset. You absorb audience insights and translate them into vision. You are analytical, decisive and clear in how you lead, communicate and prioritise. Commercially minded, you understand what drives growth and engagement in the UK media and search landscapes, as well as how to deploy limited resources for maximum impact. You consistently evaluate priorities, reinvesting energy and resources where Yahoo News can achieve the greatest audience and business outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Define and articulate the editorial vision for Yahoo News UK, ensuring the brand is a trusted, engaging and essential destination for UK audiences.
  • Champion an audience‑first approach, ensuring all editorial decisions are informed by insights and analytics to maximise reach, engagement and value for users.
  • Lead and inspire the editorial team to execute content strategies that drive audience growth, engagement and loyalty across Yahoo’s digital products, including web, mobile and social.
  • Develop and refine curation strategies that position Yahoo News as the trusted guide to the internet, with diverse, relevant and memorable content for British audiences.
  • Maintain the highest standards for accuracy, neutrality, inclusivity and balance across all products and content.
  • Evaluate performance and ROI across initiatives, making data‑informed decisions about where to reinvest for maximum editorial and business impact.
  • Collaborate with sales, business development and global editorial teams to identify growth and revenue opportunities, sharing best practices and strategy.
  • Foster a culture of responsiveness, flexibility and ownership, supporting the professional development of managers, editors and writers.
  • This is a UK‑based position reporting to the Head of International and Strategic Projects. The portfolio includes the Yahoo homepage, original content across Yahoo News, Entertainment, Lifestyle and shared oversight of Yahoo News’s third‑party media partners.
Qualifications
  • Extensive experience working in UK media, including senior editorial leadership roles at respected UK‑based publishers, broadcasters or digital platforms.
  • Deep and proven track record within the UK media market, with a nuanced understanding of its audiences, competitors and content dynamics.
  • A strategic perspective grounded in UK media experience on how Yahoo can win as an aggregator and guide to the internet for UK users.
  • Proven leadership in a digital newsroom with large‑scale audiences, and a record of setting and executing editorial strategy that drives measurable audience growth and revenue.
  • Strong editorial judgement and grounding in journalistic ethics and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, freelancers and editorial teams efficiently while maintaining high standards.
  • Expertise in audience analytics, SEO best practice and data‑informed editorial decision‑making.
  • Experience with the UK search ecosystem and understanding of how editorial and SEO strategies intersect.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
  • A collaborative, creative problem‑solver who balances strategic thinking with hands‑on execution.
