Role Overview
Director of Energy & Environment to lead the division and contribute to City Science's next phase of growth. The ideal candidate combines strong business acumen, people management skills, and a passion for sustainability and engineering with a deep understanding of the intersection between technology, data science and regional planning.
Role Responsibilities
- Business Growth & Profitability
- Drive business development strategy and delivery, maintaining a healthy and growing pipeline.
- Own the Energy & Environment P&L, accountable to the CEO.
- Systematically track progress, provide transparency and take remedial action.
- Build and maintain relationships with key clients, partners and stakeholders.
- Represent the company externally.
- Leadership
- Manage a team of engineers and consultants to deliver high‑quality deliverables.
- Foster collaboration, innovation and an impact‑oriented culture.
- Communicate mission, objectives, targets and personal development plans.
- Mentor second‑tier management through the People Team.
- Collaborate with the Senior Management Team to exceed organisational goals.
- Project Delivery
- Oversee successful delivery, ensuring monitoring against milestones, budget and quality.
- Plan resourcing needs proactively.
- Ensure highest levels of customer satisfaction.
- Initiate remedial action to keep projects on schedule and profitable.
- Identify, assess and mitigate business risks.
- Implement quality control across all projects.
- Thought‑Leadership & Quality Assurance
- Lead as Project Director on high‑profile projects within Energy & Environment.
- Provide technical oversight, advisory and analysis.
- Use advanced simulation software and data analytics to model scenarios and forecast trends.
- Stay current with industry trends, technologies and best practices to drive improvement.
- Maintain leadership in Net Zero technical and policy developments.
Job Requirements
- Strategic and delivery experience; a proven record of securing and managing a growing pipeline and winning new business.
- At least £3m annual revenue turnover, profitable project delivery, P&L and pipeline ownership.
- Director‑level commercial knowledge (contracts, legal compliance, budgeting, planning and profitability).
- Growth mindset and proven expertise in Energy & Environmental engineering / Net Zero.
- Leadership experience: managing teams, mentoring, and driving a high‑performance environment.
- Experience monitoring and driving success, developing and maintaining client relationships.
- Degree in a technical or scientific field.
- Strong understanding of urban planning, smart city technologies or related fields.
- Exceptional analytical, problem‑solving, communication and presentation skills.
- Desirable: experience with software development teams and projects.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and develop staff within a high‑performance culture.
