Location – University of Portsmouth

Salary - Scale SO2 - £38,754.00 - £40,893.00

Hours – 37 per week

Contract – Permanent

After 3 years of service, you will receive an extra £1,500 a year.

After 5 years of service, you will receive an extra £3,000 a year.

As a Digital Forensic Investigator, your role will be the forensic examination and retrieval of evidence and intelligence from digital devices and related media.

Your role on any day may include :
  • To carry out forensic examinations of digital devices and media. Where applicable, secure and retrieve relevant data from those devices, in accordance with national and local guidelines. To be carried out by utilising proprietary and bespoke forensic hardware and software.
  • Extract data using suitable applications for the Officer in the Case (OIC) to view. Be able to facilitate viewing of the data by the OIC and advise accordingly, so that the OIC may understand the evidential significance of what has been recovered and use that material to further his / her investigation and for presentation in court.
  • Prepare reports and statements and have a working knowledge of the rules of evidence relating to seizure, preservation and admissibility. Advise CPS / Counsel in relation of digital evidence and if necessary present evidence in court in a clear and comprehensible manner.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to colleagues in relation to forensic examinations and advise and give guidance before / during / after interviews and the validity of answers provided by suspect. Assist OIC with finding potential weaknesses in statements.

All applicants must be aware that they will have to work with child abuse material on a frequent basis; both internal processes and external assessments will support your well‑being in this area.

Essential Qualifications

Educated to QCF Level 6 in Computer Studies OR BEng / BSc in related engineering or technical subject, such as software development, electronic engineering / information systems OR work experience in a digital forensic subject deemed to have brought the postholder to a comparable level.

Essential Experience
  • Work experience in digital forensics. e.g. in another law enforcement or private digital forensics lab.
  • Able to demonstrate a comprehensive investigative / analytical capability.
  • Experienced in the use of a wide range of operating systems, for example, Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and / or iOS mobile devices.
  • Experience of producing detailed technical reports.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of a wide variety of file systems.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of digital forensic soft
