About the role

Balfour Beatty Power T&D is seeking a Design Manager to join their team in Scotland.

Role Purpose

Manage the delivery of design on the Skye OHL and UGC projects, collaborating closely with commercial, production, and engineering teams during both pre-construction and construction phases.

What you'll be doing

Accountabilities

  • Manage development and implementation of design proposals, ensuring they meet customer requirements, budget constraints, and deliver safety, quality, ease of maintenance, energy efficiency, environmental considerations, and innovation.
  • Brief and manage design teams effectively.
  • Oversee subcontractor design packages and technical approvals.
  • Develop and manage the design deliverables schedule, including gate reviews and communication with project stakeholders.
  • Coordinate design data, reports, and documentation to meet contractual requirements.
  • Seek advice on the 'buildability' of designs from construction teams.
  • Engage with statutory bodies and authorities as necessary.
  • Manage change control processes.
  • Support BIM implementation and workflows.
  • Lead value engineering and lean construction initiatives to optimize costs and reduce waste.
  • Capture and share lessons learned across projects and teams.
  • Contribute proactively to risk and value management processes.
  • Uphold Balfour Beatty’s values and a focus on Zero Harm and Safety by Design.

Who we're looking for

Candidate should have proven experience in delivering design services during development and construction, with leadership skills in a matrix organization, good interpersonal skills, and knowledge of BIM and current construction contracts like NEC3. An HND or higher, relevant professional membership, and strong IT and report-writing skills are desirable.
