Overview

Dermatology Phototherapy Nurse
Band 5

Opportunity for an experienced phototherapy nurse with an interest in dermatology who is willing to develop their skills and knowledge with view to progressing.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the assessment and delivery of care needs, to ensure a co-ordinated and comprehensive service for patients with general dermatology skin condition.
  • Support within and undertake nurse led phototherapy sessions, recording patient’s treatment plans, their cumulative doses and adverse events.
  • Adhere to local risk assessments and local protocols to avoid risk of litigation, harm to patients from UV burns and potentially to staff and visitors from UV over exposure.
  • Assist in the management and organisation of work within the clinical area.
  • Provide expert nursing advice and support to patients, relatives/carers regarding their skin conditions.
  • Teach, support and develop colleagues within the Dermatology setting.
  • Act in a manner consistent with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and carry out duties in accordance with Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • Act in accordance with the Code of Conduct associated with a Registered Nurse.
  • Develop new skills, knowledge and competencies relevant to the sphere of work and specialty.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide psychological support for patients, relatives and carers.
  • Participate in health promotion activities to raise professional and public awareness of skin disease.
  • Deal effectively and sensitively with patient issues, collaborating with PALS/complaints service as appropriate.
  • Ensure all records relating to patient care are accurate, clear, concise, and legible.
  • Ensure adherence to the Trust Medicines Policy and the NMC Standards for the Administration of Medicines.
  • Participate in audits of practice including infection prevention and control initiatives.
  • Maintain effective communication links with all levels of staff within the trust and external agencies.
  • Create a learning environment for all grades of staff and act as a mentor / assessor of competence.
  • Possess expert clinical knowledge appropriate to area of responsibility and base own practice on current literature and research.
  • Use professional judgement and initiative to promote safe practice.
  • Responsible for own professional registration / development.
  • Participate in appraisals and personal reviews.
  • Concentrate for long periods and respond to unpredictable patient and staff demands.
  • Maintain contemporaneous patient records which are completed with registration number.
