  • Lead and supervise nursing care across all areas of the Emergency Department.
  • Maintain excellent communication with the shift leader and manage patient flow through assigned areas.
  • Develop shift leader competencies under supervision and take charge of the department as required.

Job Description
  • Work autonomously in all areas of the Emergency Department as required.
  • Provide supervision and evaluation of nursing care within the department and oversee individual areas to ensure high quality care.
  • Manage the flow of patients through assigned areas and maintain excellent communication with the shift leader.
  • Take charge of the department with the support of a senior nurse and use competencies.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care for defined patient groups.
  • Provide direct nursing care to named patients.
  • Supervise care given by junior staff and monitor standards.
  • Maintain accurate nursing documentation and liaise with multidisciplinary teams and community agencies.
  • Contribute to the continuing development of the Emergency Department philosophy.
  • Assign patient care to team members ensuring high quality and continuity of care.
  • Participate in internal rotation within the Emergency Department including night duty.
Management Responsibilities
  • Manage and supervise allocated areas within the Emergency Department or take charge of the department in the absence of a senior nurse.
  • Participate and maintain effective communication of information between team members, patient and family networks.
  • Ensure the implementation of Trust, local and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Initiate and develop new ideas and changes within the Emergency Department to improve patient care.
  • Have responsibility for appropriate and cost‑effective use of resources.
  • Work within the Health and Safety at Work Act and report accidents/incidents.
  • Work as part of the team and respond positively to feedback from preceptors/colleagues.
  • Assist and become involved in line management responsibilities under the supervision of a senior sister.
Education and Development
  • Maintain a suitable learning environment for all staff grades.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of induction programmes for new staff.
  • Contribute to the learning needs of team members, student nurses and other students allocated to the Emergency Department.
  • Demonstrate a continuing process of attaining education, research, clinical and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrate awareness of groups with differing needs, e.g. children and families, older people and ethnic groups.
Professional Standards
  • Observe the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors at all times.
  • Maintain an up‑to‑date registration on the NMC register.
  • Work in a manner that protects colleagues, patients and visitors from hazards and report hazards when they arise.
  • Ensure compliance with mandatory and statutory training for oneself and junior staff.
Person Specification – Essential Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse/Midwife or ODP
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent
  • A&E/ALS/ATNC or other relevant course
  • MTS trained and competent
