About us

The team you will be joining operates from a dedicated highway maintenance depot on Swinton Hall Road, Swinton, Salford. We are a growing team with 50 staff delivering a range of highway, street lighting and drainage services across Salford.

About the Role

We are looking for a reliable and organised Deputy Depot Controller to support the operational management of our Highways Depot. This role is vital to ensuring the smooth delivery of highways maintenance services across the borough, supporting the safety and efficiency of our road network.

Working within a local authority environment, you will assist in opening and locking up the depot, managing stock and inventory, and maintaining compliance with health and safety standards. You will also deputise for the Depot Controller during periods of absence, ensuring continuity of service. The role is mainly outdoors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the day-to-day running of the highways depot, including opening and locking the depot, setting alarm systems, coordination of vehicles, plant, and materials.
  • Assist in the monitoring and management of stock levels, ensuring timely ordering and accurate record‑keeping.
  • Assist with scheduling of materials for works, taking deliveries, and collections in line with service priorities.
  • Ensure depot operations comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain operational documentation including timesheets, equipment logs, and incident reports.
  • Liaise with highways teams, contractors, and suppliers to support service delivery.
  • Act as Depot Controller during absences, ensuring continuity of depot operations.
Qualifications & Experience
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths.
  • Experience in depot, logistics, or highways operations within a public sector or contractor environment.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • IT literacy (e.g. MS Office, asset or stock management systems).
  • Knowledge of highways maintenance processes and local authority procedures (desirable).
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Logistics, Construction, or related field (desirable).
  • Forklift, JCB, telehandler or plant operation certification.
